Show WILD WINDS a 0 A Ten Hie Hurricane iu 1215 souri A Town Blown Dews and then Burned I 0 Terrible Loss ol Lire Over 100 Fatalities Reported and All nut in Yet Mempvs 19 A severe storm wept over Memphis early this morning morn-ing I wo houses in the southern por Lion of the city were struck by lightning At Covington forty miles north of Memphis the couit house was struck by lightning St Lou s 19Tnu id a report re-port that nearly the whole town cf Harsbfield Mo was blown down by a terrific wind storm last night and ben burned resulting in a frightful loss of life The telegraph wires are all down and nothing direct from the scene of the calamity can ke obtained at present From passengers who pissed trough Warsbfield on the SL Louis and San Francisco Railway at 830 last night some facts concerning the terrible disaster are gleaned A man who came to the depot at the edge of the town while the train was tbere reported that at 6 30 oclock a furious hurricane ttruck the place and levelled all that part of the town lying west ol Centre square flat to the ground The debris immediately took fire in several places and the flames could bo seen at some half dozen points by pasaen gera on the train Forty dead bodies bad been taken out and many more were supposed to be buried in the ruins cr burned up Thero are also many living still imprisoned in the debris of the fallen buildings All the physicians of the town are killed excepting two and there was great need of doctors to attend the wounded of whom it was said there were some 200 A relief train with twenty physicians nurses and full supplies Springfield Mo this morning for Marshfield and probably other trains will nrnvo during the day The storm was general Southwestern Missouri and other places nave probably prob-ably suflereG damage but aa the telegrapn wires are prostrated no advices ad-vices have been received A violent bail and rain accompanied the wind A telegram from Springfield ma Vinitia and Kansas City to C W Roger general manager ol the St Louis and San Francisco Railrrad saya A hurricane passed a lew miles souta of Springfield about 7 oclock last night doing an immense amount ot damage and killing a great uum bar ol people Fifty deaths are reported re-ported on James River six miles south of BpriugQeldjind a great many persons nre missing The train dispatcher dis-patcher of Conway fourteen miles this side of Marshfield report arriving arriv-ing there from Springfield at 11 oclock and says ho found a terrible okmg country From the North View seven miles west of Marshfield to the latter point trees throe feet through were turn entirely cut of tho gro a telegraph poles twisted off the telegraph tele-graph line the line is down at diQsr ent points between Springfield and Conway perhaps 100 miles altogether A new Catholic church at Cuba ninety miles from hero was blown down No damage was done to the rail read except the destruction of one small section house The names o the killed and wounded at Marsbfiela have not boon received yet telegraphic tele-graphic communication not being restored re-stored at this writng There are also reports here that the city of Granby about 100 miles southwest of Sprinp field ia i greatly damaged and the Wurrenaburg on the Missouri Pacific Railroad sixty five miles this side ol Kansas City was badly injured and everything wrecked The town of Marsbfield is demolished brick as well as frame buildings being torn down We did not see more than half a dozen people as wo came through that town The place seem p deserted Tho doctors and nurses who came on our train from Sprm field about twenty iu number went from the depot alono to hunt up the people thero being no one at the depot to receive them We sent a relief train from Lebanon to M nh field at daylight this morning with about filly doctor nurses and helpers help-ers and full supplies of provision cothing and medicines |
