Show CITY CREEK CATCH a I Municipal Wisdom Shown in the Purchase Pur-chase or the Canyon The acquisition of more ianda in City Creek canyon by the city ia a project which baa the hearty endorsement endorse-ment of THE HERALD Already within the past few months three whole sections have been purchased and these added to what the city formerly for-merly held there completed the ownership of the canyon from about a mile above the Eagle gate to the old Seven Mile mill at the forks But it seems the Mayor and Council were not willing to etop there and on Tuesday evening last an action was taken authorizing the Mayor to negotiate nego-tiate for the purchase from the U P Railway Co of two more sections in City oreek One of these according to a certificate submitted the same evening contains the land in the north fork and the other the east fork of the canyon the latter covering the little valley called First Lake IJ now historically known as the place of an alleged deposit of dead sheep If for no other reason than to prevent these herds of sheep from being driven into the canyon add polluting the stream Which furnishes citizens with water it is essential that the title to City Ceek canyon should te vested in the corporation of Salt Lake city Ber haps the sheep stories afloat a few weeks since were exaggerated but certain it was there was enough truth in them to make the average ciizen feel gloomy and dubious They were at leaot fraught with an unpleasant suggestiveness that might not have been experienced had every citizen who drank the water known that no sheep were permitted in the canyon But aside from this question of stock polluting the water which however involves the health and perhaps the life of the people of the cityother reasons may be advanced for procuring procur-ing possession of these lands reasons which likewise affect the wellbeing of the city and its inhabitants If steps had not already been taken successfully suc-cessfully barring all other applicants from acquiring title to land in the canyon a vast amount of difficulty might be engendered by the establishment establish-ment of manufactories or other industries in-dustries along the creek which however how-ever neoesary they may be to the advancement of commercial or other interests would scarcely be an agreeable agree-able adjunct to the hills above the oitynot only because of the prou abiiity of their befouling the stream but from the fact that a portion of the waters would necessarily be diverted from their proper channel and consumed by waste or otherwise and it is well known that water is an element in this community that cannot can-not well be spared THE HERALD is of tha opinion that Oity Creek canyon should be held sacred by the city for the benefit of Its inhabitants first asa as-a reservoir which furnishes their water supply and second as a resort for their recreation and health Any movement of the City Fathers in this direction is sure to receive tbe unqualified un-qualified approbation of all goo3 citizens citi-zens |
