Show A Chicago Newspaper Burned Out Chicago 1While nearly every engine in the city has been called into service at Farwell block the fire alarm was turned in from the office of the Evening Journal on Dearborn street between Madison and Monroe and before the arrival ot the first steamer on the scene the flames were making their way through the windows in the upper story of the fine stone front The flames had made rapid progress and despite the best efforts of the department at 11 oclock when the fire seemed fairly under control three upper stories had been very thoroughly burned out and the entire en-tire structure was completely water soaked The working outfit ol The paper with the possible exception excep-tion of the presses was utterly destroyed de-stroyed The Journal building was a fine fourstory stone structure erected to replace one destroyed in the great fire and was taken Possession Posses-sion of by the paper in April JJ 1873 The J B Jeffrey Printing company com-pany one of the largest show printing establishments in the country occupied a portion of the building and suffered almost attal loss which is estimated at fully 60000 The Journal and the printing company both carried adequate ade-quate insurance I |
