Show The Kello aSjiofford Case Washington 10Tho Senate committee commit-tee took up the KelloggSpofford case today to-day Spofiord was represented by Judge I Merrick Kellcgg and his counsel were both present with several witnesses I Some discussion of the manner of conducting I con-ducting the proceedings was brought on by a suggestion from Judge Merrick that I only members cf the committee examine I and crossexamine witncsscs It was decided de-cided however that counsel and tho parties par-ties interested might also interrrgato witnesses wit-nesses John A Walsh banker of this city testified in rebuttal of the testimony of Barney Williams before the subcorn mittee in New Orleans that ho had conducted con-ducted five Kellcgg witnesses to the senators sen-ators rooms about midnigbton tho 4th of Jnne last that they remained there along i a-long time and that Senator Kellcgg produced pro-duced an enyolopa containing twenty five 100 bils which ho distributed equally among the five witnesses Walsh also testified that he occupied a room adjoining Senator Kellogg on the night in Question that there was a connecting doOr usually open that he was in and out of Senator Kelloggs room frequently before midnight and that from 12 until after 130 was in Kel loggs parlor converting uninterruptedly and that he was positive neither Williams Wil-liams nor five witnesses were in Kelloggs room up to 130 and moreover be believed they could not have visited Kel qggs rooms alter the late hour without his knowing it After the examination Judge Merrck declined to allow the witnes to be discharged dis-charged untl after Walker his counsel now on his way to Washington from New Orleans shall have had an oppor tunity to crossexamine the witness The committee reassembles on Monday |
