Show CITY COUNCIL Pursuant to adjournment the City Council convened for the transaction of business on Tuesday May llth 1880 Mayor Little presiding A petition was V submitted from Brigham Young setting forth that t it I Fruit street be opened to the width now proposed it will necessitate the removal of a considerable portion of the old adobe Lamb Barn which would materially impair the value o said property while no especial benefit bene-fit would accrue to the public He therefore eked that a suitable committee com-mittee be appointed from the Com cil at an early day to investigate the matter Referred to the committee on streets and alleys A petition was read signed by Elbridge Tufts setting forth that in I view of the proposed uso of the iehth Ward Snnara for a market I place for bay woo stock weigh scales etce would respectfully ask for an appointment to the office of market or yard master over tho said grounds and promised i appointed faithfully and honestly to a tend tj all the duties required of him in said position Referred to the acting market master A petition from W N Cook of the Twentyfirst Ward was received stating that the city watermaster had informed him that the lumber asked fnr to repair the petitioners property for damage done from waters of Bed Butte could not be furnished by the city Petitioner therefore threatened i f the water is not taken oQ his lot and tho ground made good within ten days to proceed against the city as required by law Referred to the committee on claims A petition from Julia Sindborg Sixteenth Ward asking remittance license to do I small business as merchant was referred to tho committee com-mittee on license W E Wilcox petitioned to be allowed V al-lowed to take charge of Union Square to put up such parts of the fence as are in need of repair to keep trespassers tres-passers out of the grounds and to water said square all of which he would do to the best of his ability i i I the Council would grant him the privilege of appropriating to his own use what hay and grass can be had upon the place and to stake a couple of cows in such places as it would not granted be profitable to mow Petition not A communication in relation to license addressed to the Mayor from Philip Margetts was received and referred re-ferred to the Committee on license The Mayor reported that the committee com-mittee on arbitration viz Archibald Gardiner Reuben Miller and Isaao M Stewart to whom waa referred the matter of damages against the city for the right of way for the Jordan Jor-dan and Salt Lake City Canal through land belonging to Angus M Cannon Can-non and whereon be bad contemplated contem-plated the location of a mill race had rendered their decision in the matter as follows That the whole damages including the land the I contemplated water power and all other things in which the said Angus j M Cannon may of right claim damages I dam-ages save only the bridge flumes < culverts etc be assessed at Slo 1 and that said gum be paid by the corporation C cor-poration M Cannon of Salt Lake City to Angus I The committee on construction of the Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal rendered their report for April The amount expended during the month on construction aj psr the accompanying accom-panying vouchers was 1605693 Work during the month had progressed pro-gressed ratisfactorily nineteen of the contractors having finished their jobs and received their final estimates The enlargement of that portion of the canal between the dam in the Jordan and the flume of the South Jordan canal the committee reported was under contract and would be finished in a few days so that the amount of water necessary for the two canals could be run through at any time The Mayor exolained that this report was dated May let and that since that time the work of enlargement referred to in the report had been completed The report was referred to the committee on finance The action of the mayor in borrowing borrow-ing money to continue the work on the Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal was approved and he was authorized to borrow a further cum of 20000 o so much thereof as may be necessary to prosecute the work till such time as the bonds are issued Alderman Pyper submitted a report of the police court for the month of April Sixtynine cases had been tried and 1252 50 assessed in fines 102350 of which had been paid in cash and 229 in labor on the public works Bill of Wm Hyde for boarding city prisoners for month of April lGSO meals at He 18326 was allowed Adjourned to next Tuesday evening at the usual hour |
