Show CALIFORriI L1HiD LWUE i I I I I Settlers Resist tli f Ejcetmeni Ordered by lto Coast I Several Persons Killotl and si Number VloniiiHiI San Fia ncucp 11The contest between the railrand comrany and bo settlers on tbQ lange claimed by the company in what is known MS toe Mussel hugh district in Tulare and Fresno Counties terminated h day in a tmgeay United State Marshal Ppolo lelt Here a day or two I ego to seive a writ of ejectment on ceitain sotUoraby vilt1e of the decision deci-sion of tbe circuit court in favor ol 1 the railroad company Tim afternoon I after-noon Deputy Marshal Worth of this i city received the following dispatsb from Marshal Poole In attempting to execute the writ four men were killed and two wounded No further particulars are yet received The settlers are banded tog tiler lor mutual protection and express the determination to resist the attempts at ejectment IAn I-An interview with the railroad authorities in this cty discloses that M D Hart and W J Crow bad purchased Bomo three years ago certain lands from the railroad company com-pany the settlera on which refused to surrender possession and yesterday United States Marshal Poole went down for that purpose taking with biro Mr Clark agent of the company to point out tbe pieces of laud in dispute dis-pute Hurt and Crow accompanying them Tbo following was received by the company from Poole this afternoon I put Hart in possession of tbe tract He and Crow followed Clark and I to another section and met Defendant Defend-ant Storer who talked with Crow about compromising Storer rode off saying be would eeo his partner and here whit ho thought ol it Soon after he left about forty mounted men made towards us I left my buggy with Clark nod advanced to meet them After a brief conversation with them they suddenly covered me with rifles and pistols Some of them rode rapidly towards the wagon occupied by Crow and Hart One of tho horses struck my leg with his foot and threw me down I am not certain who fired first I think thee possibly four settlers are I killed and one or two wounded Hart is shot in tbo groin fatally I 1 think Clark and myself are not hurt SignedA A W TOOLE U S Marshal It is further learned that after the shooting occurred the settlers ran tho telegraph operator at Hanford Depot who is also the agent of the railrcad company cut of town and there has been no telegraphic communication with that place since noon but news is momentarily expected from runner dispatched to the nearest etation on tbe main line of tbe Southern Pacific A Vii 1ia dispatch says tho league picnic took place at Hanford today at which abcut 200 persons were present United States Marshal Poole and W H Clark land Grander arrived at Hanford this morning to dispossess settlers nod left Hanford at 730 to serve a process on William Brodon and others The leaguers collected and allowed the marhal and overtook him three miles north of Grangeville and commanded him ana Grander to surrender which they did Then tbey commanded Crow the purchaser pur-chaser from the railroad company and a companion named Hart to surrender Instead of surrendering they leaped from tho spring wagon And fired with a shot gun and ride killing James Harris Iver Kunteon and John Henderson and wounding Arch McGregor Wm Broden D Kelley and Haymaker All tbs set tlera returned tile fire wounding Hart fatally and aa Crow retreated re-treated at some ditanea shot struck him killing him instantly There is great excitement at Hanford and vicinity but the leaders of the league caution nrudence |
