Show An Assassin Confesses Memphis 160n the 26th of last July Thos Savle a young merchant engaged in business at Oakland Miss eighty miles south ot Memphis Mem-phis was assassinated by an unknown un-known party who mutilated the remains in a most horrible manner Suspicion pointed to a negro named Joe Payne who was arrested and yesterday he made a full confession and it was given out that he would be publicly hanged today at noon The Appeals Oakland Miss special thus describe his taking today At 235 pm Joe Payne colored was hanged by the almost unanimous unan-imous vote of 500 or 600 citizens The proceedings were quiet aud businesslike Hon J M Moore mayor of Oakland presiding presid-ing V N Fitzgerald and WV Moore attorneys prosecuted Payne made a full confession After the confession a vote was taken and death by hanging was the verdict ver-dict of the crowd who acted as jurors Gallows were at once erected and the prisoner mounted the scaffold with a firm step He made a speech again confessing his guilt advising everybody to teach their children to avoid evil thoughts The black cap was adjusted adjus-ted the drop fell and in ten minutes he was pronounced dead The colored col-ored people were as clamorous as the whites for avenging the crime aid people think they have done right |
