Show THE NEW YOEK Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has been guilty of a great many foolish and inconsistent actions One of these was the prevention of a fairy spectacle spec-tacle last winter by obtaining an order ftoii the court prohibiting the theatrical managers from allowing children to appear on the stage The little girls wanted to play and it was shown that neither their lives nor health would be endangered by the performance but the society made it appear tbftt parents cruelly forced their little ones to go upon tbe stage Now however the society has been operating in hi proper sphere in prosecuting one Thomas Smith whose boy took part in a pedestrian matcb The lad was driven around the ring scolded shamefully abused and while no violence was applied it was clear that the dread of the fathers gad incited him to greater efforts than was good for him Threats were finally of no ayail and toe pojr child vMsoarried from the rink fainting and exhaurted The society took hia case in baud and his succeeded in having the heartless father bound over for trial The boy is represented now as saying that he was not compelled to walk but there were many witnesses to the brutal conduct of the unnatural parent It is huped the court and jury will deal with the father with as much mercy as the letter manifested in the treatment treat-ment of his child Much of the foolishness foolish-ness on the part of the S P 0 C may be forgiven if it will bring about u few convictions of such lelowa as Smith |
