Show More for the Poscas Washington 28A till waa introduced intro-duced by Senator Dawes today to establish the rights of the Ponca Indians In-dians and settle their affairs It directs the President to inform all tribes of Indiana that government recognize and regrets the injustico heretofore done the Ponca Indiana It also declares and confirms the rights of the Poncs to have and to hold their lands in Nebraska and the terriloiy of Dakota which were ceded by government It directs the teoro tary of the interior within sixty days after the passage of the act to institute insti-tute negotiations with the bands of Sioux Indiana in whose grant for a reservation the Ponca lands were wrongfully included for a relinquishment relinquish-ment of any claim they may have to said Ponca lanes and authorizes the secretary of the treasury to satSafy the Sioux for sucb relinquishment by giving them other lands or money or both lands and money It also requires the secretary secre-tary after the completion of such negotiations ne-gotiations to notifiy tbe Poncaa that government will hereafter protect their persons and property upon these lands and inform them they are free to go upon their old reservation with their movable property government paying cost of transportation The bill provides for an appropriatiion of 35000 to bo expended for their benefit in the erection of houses and schoolhouses and for agricultural implements im-plements and also an annual appropriation appro-priation of 53000 for a period of five years in addition to all annuities which may be due them It provides pro-vides for the allotment ot tbeir lands in severally the title to the same not to be subject to lien alienation or encumbrance en-cumbrance or eubject to taxation of any kind for thirty years |
