Paul one of the normal students who was chosen by his classmates for the duty President John Taylor then made an address The occasion calling for it his subject was education In his remarks he referred to the manifold mani-fold channels through which education educa-tion could be made of use and how gradual had the wide intelligence of this age been acquired He made some ant illustrations also of thn rapid strides of human sand s-and the facilities they afforded for the dissemination of knowledge He congratulated the students and professors pro-fessors on their success and gave all some sound advice His remarks were listened to with manifest interest in-terest and seemed to make a deep impression on his hearers T B Lewis then delivered short address on the topic of education and being himself a teacher was in a position to and did so give many sound suggestions to the class of normal graduates and said muclf that will be a profit for all who listened to keep in remembrance The concluding remarks were made by Hon Geo Q Cannon Without following the line of his reflections it is only necessary to state that he referred earnestly to the work of educating the young He said lie was strongly in favor of building up University in every legitimate way and of putting within with-in the reach of all as far as could be done the power of securing a good and thorough and practical education educa-tion The choir then sang and benediction bene-diction was pronounced by Hon Jos F Smith and the exercises concluded Today what has grown to be as much of a custom as the closing exercises will be observed and which makes a pleasurable conclusion con-clusion so far as many are concerned con-cerned to the associations growing out of college life This custom is what might be termed an outall the students their friends old students stu-dents and friends of the University generally being invited to take a trip to Calders Farm where the day will be passed in merrymaking All those intending to go will meet at the Silk Factory up City Creek at 7 oclock this morning Connected with the closing exercises exer-cises of Friday atternoon is a most gratifying factthe general excellence excel-lence of the classes It has been observed ob-served heretofore that at the close of each academic year there has not only been noticeable a general improvement im-provement in the students themselves them-selves but that those in the classes have excelled others who have pre ceded them in the same studies this is referring to the students as a body The result of this is that with each succeeding succeed-ing year opportunity is not only afforded for a higher grade of studies but it becomes a necessity that advances be made Nothing that can be said could speak in better terms of the system under which the schoolis conducted of its management nor of the intelligence intel-ligence and aptitude of the students In many respects classes of the academic year just closed were the best that have ever attended The normal class was the best for one the ceoirramiv class also the rhet oric and English literature class was equal to any previous one and the class in mathematics far ahead In this latter class problems which were solved by but one in fifteen two years ago were this year worked to a satisfactory solution by six out of eight a remarkable difference differ-ence in the percentage All this shows the forward movement of education ed-ucation an increasing intelligence in the young the growing desire for higher and higher branches of learning learn-ing a proper system for imparting I education and that the heart of our growing territory is in the right place on this most important subject sub-ject May the next closing exercises exer-cises take place in the newbuilding and may as rapid progress be seen in 188182 as has been witnessed since 1879SO |
