Show SUNDAY SERVICES The opening hymn at the services i the Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon af-ternoon was the one beginning 0 Godl our help in ages past Our hope for year t come Our shelter from the stormy bar And our eternal home Prayer by Bishop John Tingey The choir sang the hymn beginning begin-ning Ye children of ourO dYe d-Ye lain of Utter days Surround the tempi of our Lord And join to sing hu praise ELDER JOHN MORGAN addressed the congregation He said that the saint realized the fact that no man kuoweth the things of God but by the spirit of God that no man could enlighten his fellow man a t the things of God unless his mind was enlightened by the spirit of God thus whatever knowledge Josoph Smith had possessed did not suffice to bring t him the record that had been deposited ages ago in the hill Cumorah I required a revelation from God t enable him to find the record or the plates and terwards it was a sealed book to him Th characters inwhich the record was written were unintelligible to him and also t the learned men of the earth the record was sealed to all even those who transcribed it from the lips of Joseph Smith The later could only translate it by revelation from on high Even that revelation did not give Smith authority to act in any other capacity His power and authority t establish the gospel was conferred upon him by thaLord through John the Baptist Afterwards After-wards the ilelchizedek priesthood WITS conferred upon him by Peter James and John Thus he received the endowments at different times acquiring power and knowledge by step His instruction did not come from man but through revelation revela-tion from God Thus in the early i inception of the church it was necessary for Joseph Smith whom the saints regard a the greatest of prophets standing next to Jesus Christ t gain his knowledge from God and if ic were necessary in the early days of the church t obtain knowledge of the road to salvation it seemed also necessary today that the spirit of God be bestowed upon his people Gods kingdom was progressive pro-gressive and we should be able to increase in knowledge and intelli gence of the father as we grew in years One of the grandest principles princi-ples of the gospel was that the saints had the privilege of advancing in knowledge and light throughout the endless ages of time Death did not stop their progress but the faithful saints would advance after this brief life in useful knowledge and intelligence By the world the saints were supposed to be an ignorant igno-rant unlearned people gathered from the lower classes of society The same charge was made against Jesus in his day This charge seemed absurd to the speaker in view of the fact that the wise men of the world with all their knowledge knowl-edge and intelligence could not refute re-fute the arguments presented by the elders PRESIDENT GEORGE Q CANNON followed occupying the remainder of the afternoon He said there was I something connected with this work which was very attractive to those who were honest and willing to espouse the truth When men had deviated from the beaten path daring to think and act differently from their fellows in the matter of putting in practice higher truths they had encountered deadly opposition opposi-tion and persecution The saints could derive consolation from this fact They were not the first who fact Ther frt had had all manner of evil charged against them and denounced a unworthy un-worthy to live Beginning with Abel and coming down to the time of Joseph and Hyrum Smith the I best men the world had known had suffered martyrdom because of their adherence to the truth Of all people peo-ple who now live the saints were the most favored and they should be the most grateful for the bless ing that they enjoy In conversation conversa-tion with people concerning the views of the saints he had hoard expressions ex-pressions of astonishment from intelligent in-telligent men when they learned of the principles of the Latterday Saints There was a consistency a simplicity about those principles which was pleasing to the intelli gent man The orthodox religions relig-ions of the day would not bear investigation Their principles prin-ciples could not be explained There was a limit to them beyond which they could not go This was not so with the saints whose gospel led them forward up and beyond the knowledge of the day The speaker did not believe any man could comprehend God He was incomprehensible in-comprehensible t mortal mind His purposes also were mysterious to the wise men of the world who could not even tell why man was here nor what he should do while here It required the Inspiration of Jesus Christ to teach these great things telling why we were on the earth and how we should conduct i ourselves while here The orthodox religionists knew nothing of that i inspiration and therein was a chief difference between them and the saints The wise men traced their origin t an oyster or some other II thing but they knew nothing of it The divinity that i in u came down and not up God created man in his ow image and not in the image of an ape Jesus was the II image of his father so far a bodily parts were concerned and Jesus was ou elder brother with whom we are to b heirs and joint heirs if we were faithful Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary but all who believed in God and the Bible knew that he had an existence before coming into this world I he had a previous existence why should not others have had a similar pretence The Bible certainly conveyed the idea of a former existence The twelve apostles of Christ were chosen and ordained before they were born in the flesh Moses referred re-ferred to Jesus before the latter was born So had the coining ot Joseph Smith been foretold because God knew he would come to perform a certain work We are the children of God descendd from him there was no beginning to the race of God and there will b no end There was something glorious to contemplate contem-plate in the thought In the world men enlisted in armies buckled on the sword and went forth to meet death simply to get their nam s on the scrol of worldly fame or be recorded re-corded in some newspaper then for the sake of the glorious reward God had promised to the faithful should men in the army of the Lord falter because they were covered with ignominy and their names cast out a evil by the wicked The true heroes can in the midst of suffering and persecution look beyond present evils and see the glory that awaits the faithful This had been the case with those who had suffered for the truth in former times As to the saints the speaker did not believe there was so intelligent a people on the earth a they It required intelligence in-telligence a noble manhood and strength of mind and character to leave home and be cast out a something some-thing evil i order t become Latter day Saints They may not be learned in the knowledge of grammar and mathematics but they were Intelligent and could puzzle the wise and educated It was a grand thought to know that we gd e9I d fjoju GQ and know that God and Jesus Christ and holy ones were overlooking and surroumng us ready to put forth their inyisible arms to protect and preserve us from harm and evil Elder Cannon knew that this was true I was not the delirium of fanaticism which deceived him but his knowledge was from God The saints were of Gods family and when they were resurrected they would be brought forth with their bodily attributes only much unproved un-proved by immortality knowing each other as in this life They were of Gods race God was lobe king of kings and the saints would be those kings kings of their own families Their enjoyment would be in going forth and perpetuating the work of God There would be earths t form a this earth was created and the redemption and purification of those earths The most exquisite pleasure on this earth was in creating and it would be so hereafter God in the beginning lad commanded man to go forth and and the human mind I had multiply taken delight in obeying that command creating building up and improving I tins world we were restricted but there restrcte was an eternity before us when the barriers would be removed and I no limit be placed upon advancement I advance-ment in truth and good work There was in man a speck of divinity that could not be putout put-out if he were faithful Putting a man in prison could not kill that spark a the speaker knew from personal experience nor could death destroy it Speaking of the spread of the gospel Elder CannQn said the work could not be stayed no matter who tried to stop its pi ogress og-ress He had been much amused by the stories that the Mormons weic sending money to Washington to prevent unfriendly legislation There was absolutely no truth in those stories I would be very U wise for them to attempt to buy off their enemies with money I was said that if a tiger onc got a taste of human blood he wanted more He was never satisfied with any other kind So it would be at Washington Wash-ington I money were once used there would b all manner of schemes concocted to obtain more and certain destruction would be the result No there was a hinter power watching over the destinies of the saints They trusted in God I and not in man The speaker used speaer to think President Garfield wa ue warm friend of the Mormons He knew him to be a bighearted large souled liberalminded man and among republicans was his choice for President but the Presidents recent utterances showed utternce showe that the saints could not put their trust in man They could trust in no manor man-or party nor could they rely upon money I God were not with them the treasury of the United States would not save them and if they used money God would destroy them But there need be no fear if the people were faithful God would show the nations that he is God His word had gone forth and it would be fulfilled whether or not individuals fell by the vayside The uoik would loll forth and all that had been promised would be accomplished I individuals do right they will be saved and if they do wrong they will be damned but they might as well attempt to arrest the revolution of the earth a stay the progress of Gods work They may take the life of a prophet and delight in the thought that the work would stop but it would go on Brigham Young dies but the work goes on The gospel could not be blotted out by the puny arm of man All the saints need do was to ask God to give them power and light tow to-w alk uprightly before him They may be beset by affliction but God was above hovering over them They were objects of his solicitude and care They had left all to follow fol-low Christ and he would protect them The choir sang the hymn beginning begin-ning 0 Bay what is truth Tis the fairest gem That tho richts of words can produce And priceless the value of truth will be when I The proud monarchs costliot diadem I IE counted but dross and refine rick Benediction by ElderRobert Pat |
