Show The Mormon Elders j One of esteemed North Caro lii exchanges recently suggested the shotgun as the only complete remedy against the efforts of the Mormon propagandists who are now engaged in ihe work of making converts con-verts among the strictly rural classes of the population These efforts ef-forts are not confined to North Carolina or to Georgia or to the south We have the authority of various enthusiastic Mormon elders of saying that there is not a state in the Union where their agents and emissaries are not at work and there is no law and no legal remedy rem-edy that will reach them They have been allowed to build a sort of religious safeguard around prostitution prosti-tution and under the federal constitution con-stitution no state or federal Jaw can reach them Congress has tried the experiment and failed and Georgia has tried it and failed There must be a remedy somewhere some-where for this sort of moral disease and the remedy is with the peopie themselves who are certainly able to protect themselves and their women The shotgun of course is a remedy but it is a very b1 utal one not less brutal certainly than Mormonism but too brutal to be employed by those who claim to be civilized There are comparatively milder remedies which may be made just as effectual and the best of the e is that which gives the Mormon propagandists to understand under-stand that the sentiment of the classes among which they seek converts i con-verts had a very desperate temper behind it when once aroused Two of the propagandists recently gave a reporter of the Charlotte Journal an outline of their operations opera-tions in North Carolina They arrived ar-rived in that state some time last March There are seventeen of these apostles of prostitution at work in North Carolina and since that time they have been holding meetings and mnking converts They have had considerable success The propijranilists woib separately but meet ai stated times and places to compare notes and map out anew a-new programme They work quietly and systematically and their presence I pre-sence is known only to those who show a willingness to attend their meetings The propagandists must be good talkers adjudges of human nature They begin by riding about a neighborhood stopping at houses asking for a drink ot water or for I meals until they know the women I and the weaker of these are selected as victims Thuy are informed of meetings to be held and invited to attend and at these meetings the prostitution business is never disclosed dis-closed and the converts rarely know the fate that awaits them until they reach Utah Atlanta Constitution |
