Show Rubbish It is bad enough to go through the narrow streets and alleys in the heart of the city and see the aecum mulations of filth garbage and rottenness rot-tenness that are piled up and exposed ex-posed and to be forced to breathe the foul atmosphere that pervades some of the localities indicated But when propertyownera begin to throw out their refuse into the streets and water sees in front of their premises it is too bad Of late we have noticed litter a d rubbish rub-bish on the main thoroughfares thrown out to be blown in every direction di-rection by the wind that have been disgraceful Packing straw bottle casings paper shavings and similar light trcuk have been dumped right on the public ways and left to become be-come an eyesore to the cleanly and orderloving portion of the community commu-nity They must be dumped somewhere it is suggested and we would suggest that that somewhere be designated by an ordinance and the ordinance enforced This throwing out into the street of every little thing that is done with is in many instmces the result of thoughtlessness those who do it not realizing the effect it has upon the good looks and cleanliness clean-liness of the streets and in the case of garbage positive unhealthine Some of the castout stuff falls or is thrown into the ditches the water in which is sluggish and it remains there to putrefy stink and poison the stream The ordinance should comnel store keepers huck sters greengrocers etc to keep their refuse and rubbish upon their own premises in a box or crate or anything that will hold it in their rear yards to be called for on stated days and carted off The growth of this evil necessitates a step of some kind in the direction of abating it and if an ordinance covering the ground mentioned were adopted the officers would no doubt take an interest in-terest in enforcing it as they pride themselves as much on clein streets as they do on preserving the peace I on them |
