Show FATAL FIRE Fire Firemen Darned to Death iu Cincinnati Cincinnati HAt 5SO oclock this I morning a fire was discovered in the dry house of Jbn Gays bucket factory on I I New and Culvert streets near the foot of Mount Adams The dry houee was two tturies high The main building was saved but the dry house was destroyed Next to thn dry house was a four story brick building owned by J hn P Gay and occupied by the Crown Manufacturing Manufactur-ing Company who make kindling wood I and window ornaments In it were stored a large quantity of inflammable I rantrill From the dry house tbo flame 5 quickly laid hold of ibis building c mojencing on the ground floor First t of importance to pOp e h the lo = s of lift 5 in this builoing The neirpst fire company com-pany to the building was No4 This company was the first on tho ground and I first to enter tha second story of the Crown Manufacturing ComjianyTho object was t fight the firo raging on the ground floor by sending streams down a chute and down the ttaiways to arrest its progres to the three upper stories which were yet intact In tho room wero Chief Bunker AssirtantMar shal heldmeyor and Acting Captain Uiggmson all of the above came out alive I here were also Thomas Cooling ton of Captain Cooling of tho Four Wm Kelly and David Love regular ppemerj lid ward Parker a runner of the Fours and Andrew Barrett a pipe mnn of the Sixes all five of whom were brought out dead They ware standing around the chute sending a stream down when suddenly as if shot from a cannon A burst of scorching air and blinding smoke mingled with flames broke up with lightning suddenness sudden-ness tnrough the chute Those who got QUt can hardly tell how they Kt out Al five of the victims were dead when their bodies wero obtained three hour later The present theory is that the flames which had been gaining on tbe firemen in the basement en the cellar and gourd floors got a sudden fresb impetus and with augmented energy struck en inflm mablo pile of s nviugs nd kindling wood at th3 bittom of tho chute cd leaped up through the hatchway hatch-way Tbe victims tried to run us u shown by their positions when found When the accident became kiiown as it did instantly the most desperate energy of the department was directed to saving ho second story and putting it in condition condi-tion to enable the men to take out the bodifs This fight lasted J three hour The floor was saved from falling in and lbs bodies wero taken out when the I l flames were ingig hotly in all of the tm fl ore sbovo and beneath this one Great crowds were drawn to the scene |
