| Show Inconsistent Ordinances SALT LAKE CITY May 17 1884 Editors Herald I find from THE HERALD of this r morning that Marshal Phillips has I ordered Z C M I shoe factory to I put spark catchers on their smokestacks I smoke-stacks Now this is all right as far as the Marshal is concerned as he is simply endeavoring to carry out the provisions of the ordinance but is it not about time that the ordinances ordi-nances were revised In the interest of common sense JNuw I venture to acserta without fear of Hucce s ul c Inlradictlon that no fire cm n be started where coal only is burned from the sparks that will come rom a chimney of that height withnft ural draught or from those of the electric light works Where the firei are kept up by shavings or similar refuse as in a planing mill the case is different and a discretionary power should be left with the Marahal in such cases There is a provision of this ordI dance which provides that all boiler chimneys shall be ten feet higher than the highest building on the same block this is a manifest abs I aurally and if enforced would actually ac-tually be productive of more danger from fire in case of a high wind than if Jet alone There are some other clauses of a similar character in various ordinances ordin-ances which if they were got together to-gether in one might with propriety be entitled on ordinance for the discouragement of manufactures in the City of Salt Lake as such would be their effect if enforced ENGINEER |
