Show ART A Q I The Progress of Utah rt Students Abroad Apropos of the growing interest n art in Utah and as an evidence iof local development in that direction direc-tion comes some very gratifying information regarding the progress being made by Mr J W Clawson son of Gen H B Clawson who is now in New York It is only abovt six months since this young gentleman gentle-man left for Gotham to compete for admission to National Academy of Design At teat competition over 200 applicants were rejected the qualifications for admission being be-ing an evidence of genius in the direction of art Each applicant must place before a committee composed com-posed of some of the finest artists America an original drawing of any subject the pupil may choose The drawi3g is carefully scrutinized dud on the opinion formed by the committee from this examination depends the admission or rejection of the applicant No favor is shown in the hope that the applicant may develop into an artist i it is neces sarv that there snail be in the drawing draw-ing unmistakeable evidences of ability on the line chosen this qualification wanting it is impossible impossi-ble for any person to be admit ed into the celebrated school As will naturally be inferred from the above it is considered quite an honor to secure admission and for this reason rea-son the brightest and most promising promis-ing young artists in all parts of the country enter the admission competition com-petition Hence ic is in itself an evidence of great ability to come out of the competition successful As was stated over 200 persons were rejected at the competitionf which resulted in the admission o Mr Clawson among the few other fortunate ones Recently the annual competition for prize medals awarded by the academy to I pupils transpired and of course every student did his level best to win No consideration is made in the awarding of the medals for the time a pupil has been in the academy the drawings of the oldest and youngest pupils stand alike side by side on their merits before the committee com-mittee and the award is made to the best production independent of experience or the time of study I Mr Clawson having gained admission admis-sion to the academy at once began preparing to enter the competitive i lists for a membership in the life class and was again successful On the 11th of this month the distribution distribu-tion of the award above referred to was madeand to the surprise of Mr Clawson and the gratification of his friends his name was among those whose productions the committee deemed worthy of an award Not only this but his name stood second on the honorary roll the medal for the second best drawing being awarded to the production of his pencil This prize is known as the Bronze Suydam Medal The first prizethe Silver Suydam Medal was rewarded to Mr August Keeutzberg a gentleman who has 1 1 con in the academy for a period of five years studjiug all the time while Mr Ciawson has been there but six mouths and is the only student in the history of the academy who has been warded a prize in the first year of his academical studies The success of Mr Olawaon brings to mind also the success of the young Utah tculptor Mr C E Dal iin now at Boston and who was one of three successful c Jinpetitors in offering a model for a statue of Paul Revier So far as we have any knowledge these are the only two young men from this territory who have left the land of their nativity with a view to pushing art studies in other quarters and the success that has attended them would lead tothe belief that in fcftah there is unlimited talent which needs only opportunities and cultivation to place this growing hub of the west in the front rank ot art countries That Utah gives promises of becoming as permanent in art matters as she is in her material ma-terial products is foreshadowed by the wonderful interest that has developed in art here in the last few years These sgns are most agreeable particularly as the taste is of a sturdy growth Laving had little encouragement of that kind which comes under the suggestive appellation of the substantial The growth of art like the development develop-ment of the material resources of this territory has been measured and every advance is of that character char-acter which is in no danger of ever suffering a backward movet In a few years should the presen development continue we will hav here in Utah a taste for art an ape pre ciation of it and a substantial encouragement such as is seen only I in old established cities May it be so |
