Show A FEW days ago Lieutenant Colonel Col-onel Guido Hges of the regular army telegraphed his resignation to the Secretary of War to take effect next January Secretary Lincoln replied that he would accept ac-cept his resignation to take effect at once but otherwise he should order a courtmartial which it is said > would investigate some irregularities irregulari-ties in the officers conduct Inconsequence In-consequence of the secretarys action ac-tion Colonel Uses has forwarded his resignation to take effect immediately im-mediately These are very singular proceedings especially i the action of Secretary Lincoln He threatens an officer of high rank with a court martial in order to secure an immediate im-mediate resignation and he obtains it If he had no reason to believe that Colonel Ilges conduct merited such an investigation it was an outrage out-rage to even suggest it and if he thought that person had been guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman he had no right to allow him to retire honorably from the service It is difficult to see upon what theory the secretary justifies his course |
