Show TELEGRAPHIC The Pullman Pulling Chicago 23The sculling regatta re-gatta on Caiumet Lake near the village of Pullman today developed a surprise anp prodigy in the person per-son of young f eemer the McKees port oarsman hitherto unknown I but who displayed his mettle by winning a place in the final struggle yesterday but who failed to keep up with either Hanlon Hosmer or Hamon owing it is now claimed to his inexperience to rowing in rough water Today in what has been termed the consolation race open to ail but the three leaders of the day preceding he covered three miles in 20mins I4secs thus lowering low-ering the Couitney best record of 20mms l4Ksecs and making the best threemile time on record and upon which his reputation has been built The conditions were perfect foe fast time i he sky was overcast and the Jake placid and there was everything to encourage the contestants to show at their best Pive thousand people were on the grounds Seven men were ready when the word was given at 407 p m and went off together having been placed as follows McKay Lee Gaudaur Elliott Parker Riley Teemer and Plaisted Gaudaur showed to the front early with Riley second and Elliott third the latter pulling a stroke of thirtysix to the minute At the half mile buoy Riley and Gaudaur were abreast both leading Teemer and Lee four lengths Teemer then drew up and passed Elliott who dropped out Lee then forged ahead and turned the mile and a half buoy first in nine minutes min-utes and fifteen seconds Gaudaur second with Teemer Riley McKay and Plusted in the order named At the mile and threequarters buoy Lee makes a claim that Gaudaur fouled him and from that on his chances for the first place were gone Gaudaur pushed ahead and passed the two mile buoy at fourteen minutes and three seconds leading Lee on a half length McKay in close proximity with Teemer on his quarter and Parker and Plaisted well in the rear Lee stopped rowing soon after passing the two mile buoy all this time Teemer was rowing in fine form and passing McKay pul ed for Gaudaur with a stroke of thirtytwo to the minute at the I two and ahalf mile bouy Teemer f went to the front and had it to the finish Gaudaur coming in second two seconds Jater same with Riley McKay Parker and Plaisted following fol-lowing in the order named McKay and Riley being well up to the leaders The double scull race was called at 520 oclock with five entries en-tries as follows and in the order given Hanlan and Lee Plaisted and Parker Hosmer and McKey Gaudaur and Kennedy Weisgerber and Clayton The story of the race I is easily told Hanlan and Lee leadoff lead-off at forty strokes and were pushed for one mile by Homer and McKay Weisgerber and Clayton keeping well up Plaisted and Parker dropping drop-ping back early Hanlan and Lee passed the mile and a half buoy in eight minutes and fortytwo seconds sec-onds McKay and Hanlan second Gaudaur and Kennedy third Weis gerber and clayton fourth and Plaisted and Parker fifth After starting for home Hanlon and Lee increased their lead materially and before passing the two mile buoy ceased rowing for fully ten seconds they started again leading by six lengths and pulled strong to the finish increasing the gap momentarily mo-mentarily and crossed the line in 19m 39s Homer and McKay coming com-ing in twentysix seconds later WeisgerberandClayton nine seconds after them Gaudaur and Kennedy fourth and Plaisted and Parker fifth Chicago 23John Teemer who by the decision of the judges of the Pullman race is given the best record ever made for a three mile pull in shell is a native of McKees port Pa and is eighteen years old He is comparatively unknown in the sporting world and has done most of his rowing on the Monongahela river He has a powerful pow-erful physique and was trained under un-der Eph Morris exchampion of America |
