Show NEW SETTLEMENTS Eexbnrg Teton Wilford Lyman Burton Brighton and Parker RExnuna One da Co Idaho June 10th 1883 Editors Herald Thinking a fewitems from this sec tiou of cjuntry would be of inteiest to some of your readers I give a short description of what is being done and also of the character of the country Sino list l February Bishops Preston Pres-ton and Ricks have selected seven townaites yiz Rexburg Teton Wilford Lyman Buron Brighton and Parker which are being surveyed sur-veyed by A S Anderson who has them nearly completed Rex burg the principal town is situa ed twentyone miles northeast of Market Lake at the foot of low grassy hills sloping to the west and north The town is bounded on the north by the Teton River a beautiful stream of clear water heading near the famous ieton Peaks extending west from town to the north fork of Snake River a distance of six miles The banks of the river are covered with beautiful groves of cottonwool and quaking asp Looking south the large groves of cottonwood cotton-wood on the south fork of Snake River stand out in bold relief and furnish large quantities of wood poles and house logs as well as being be-ing pleasing to the eye The town of Rexburg covers a tract of land one mile and a half long by one mile wide the blocks of which are forty rods square and divided into four equal lots three fourths of which have been taken Already two hundred and fifty acres 01 grain have been sown two canals CJinpleted respectively six and seven feet wide and considerable building and fencing done There are oOuOO acres ot arable land between be-tween the South Fork and Teton Rivers The Teton Island formed by the Tetosi litvtr dividing and lowing into the North Fork in different dif-ferent pltre0 contains 15000 acres hat section of country lying between iween the North Teton and the North Fork contains 20000 acres aud tbat on the North side of the North Fork contains 50000 acres Tetou City is situated six miles northeast of Bexburg just below I the folks of tbe felOn Wil ford is located on the north l side of the Teton above the forks Lyman is eight miles south of Kexburg on the South Fork and Burton lies five miles southwest of Rexburg Brighton is situated ten miles northwest north-west of Hexburg on the north side of the north fork of Snake River and Parker lies nine miles north east of Bexburg also on the north side of the north Fork The people of Parker and Brighton have put crops iiuand also completed a canal taken from the north fork All these places have good facilities facili-ties for grazing and farming There is an abundance of water which can easily be brought upon the land The range is excellent and saw timber wood and poles are handy and plentiful Over 200 people have noved into the forks of Snake River within the past three months and there is yet room for many more The climate Is about the came as I Cache though the snowfall is not as deep A S ANDERSON I |
