Show THE OIL WAEEHOUSE Justioe Enters His Protest Against the Present Site SALT LAKE CITY May71883 Editors Herald As the action of our City Council in the locution of sites for oil warehouses ware-houses is causing anxiety in the minds of many deeming themselves particularly affected thereby perhaps i per-haps you will kindly furnish space in your columns for some reflections on the subject Witb some individuals it is a question whether said body has amoral a-moral or legal right to force anything any-thing onto the inhabitants of any portion of this city causing them trouble and loss that can easily be put where no one would be inconvenienced incon-venienced or suffer thereby True some may say that locating sites for said warehouses outside the inhabited inhab-ited portions of the city would put the oil companies to increased transportation trans-portation but in deciding between the two whose interests should claim the especial attention of said Councilthose of the people electing them or those of oil or any other species of outside company coming heie to trade V Suppose a ward or other portion of this city was an I isolated settlementwould any authority autho-rity even that of the national government itself except in time of war have the moral right or legal power to thrust anything into the centre or vital part of said settlement settle-ment against the wishes and interests inter-ests of mest or all the inhabitants thereof V And if not would the fact of said settlement becoming conBoUdated with other settlements and all forming an incorporate city divest the inhabitants of the former of any rights previouly enjoyed True the changed condition would bring into existence ceitaiii matters to be looked after hence the election elec-tion of officers as public servants to act as the agents of the people in carrying into effect all desired by said citizens to be accomplished for their peace safety and general welfare wel-fare so far as the same does not conflict con-flict with law nor exceed the pow eis granted by the charter of said city Some appear to hold that our City Council has the right to dictate dic-tate to the people of the city WHat is to be considered for their best interests in-terests but when the gentleman I composing the honorable body were elected it was perhaps not especially especi-ally stipulated that they should furnish brains to their constituents no more possibly than bigoted congressmen are deemed by the l people or tills Territory to oe under obligation to say what is to be considered con-sidered for the best interest of the latter Possibly some of the gentlemen gen-tlemen in question may deem themselves them-selves in duty bound to dictate and to educate or stretch up or down the people to that thus prescribed It would seem that some individuals individ-uals consider our City Council in a position not to be able to reconsider recon-sider its action in locating the oil warehouse sites If such be the case all such matters ought to be acted upon with great deliberation and perhaps it would facilitate a satisfactory conclusion to cordially confer with the people most likely to be affected by the grant sought Your correspondent has been under the impression that the action of any municipal body could when the public good seemed to require be in some manner reconsidered in that respect being of no more binding force and effect for all time to come than an act of Congress The people deeming themselves most likely to be affected in purse and otherwise by the erection and occupancy oC an oil warehouse on the site now being improved by the Standard Oil Company have petitioned and appealed to our City Council about as earnestly as is possible short of hot whereasing resolutions and it is to be hoped that the whole matter may be satisfactorily adjusted ad-justed The people protesting wish the oil companies no harm but they do not desire the sanctity of their bed rooms to be invaded by such greasy and odoriferous business as the coal oil traffic possibly no more than those engaged in said traffic would wish the sanctity of their business to be invaded by a few scores of bed rooms It seems to be feared that the fact of the land leased by the Standard Stan-dard Oil Company belonging to his honor the Mayor will be an impediment im-pediment to the desired reconsideration reconsidera-tion and consequent satisfactory settlement of the present difficulty but no such apprehensions need be entertained But few individuals desire to merit and enjoy a solid and healthy popularity and to be considered a really first rate fellow more than does his honor and the consequences of breaking said lease would be nothing to him considered in connection con-nection with meeting the just expectations ex-pectations of his constituents True would seem that suffered to pass by unimproved a golden opportunity op-portunity of securing the affection and endearing esteem of quite a portion of his constituents by I not refusing to lease said land for the site of an oil warehouse save by the expressed consent of all living in the vicinity but before judging him harshly therefor it must be borne in mind the many important duties and delicate responsibilities devolve upon him calculated to distract his mind and to cause him to unintentionally commit oversights over-sights It must not be overlooked that his physical and mental powers pow-ers have their limit of tension as well as those of in some respects less fortunate individuals Your correspondent trusts that his honor may prove to be a brick by putting put-ting his mighty shoulder to the municipal mu-nicipal wheel and successfully rolling ing all concerned out of this oily yet Seemingly sticky difficulty II S JUSTICE I a 1 |
