and belonged to the various religious denominations denomina-tions of the world but when the eWwrg presented the gospel they were told that it was necessary for tfcain to go domiinto the water and be baptized for the remission of sins and to have hands laid on them for the reception of the Holy Ghost The more they learned of the Bible the better they knew that the true gospel principles were taught that book the more they knew that the ancient prophets and apostles spoke with the power and influence ot God and that the message they taught was to this age as to all others All who received the testimony tes-timony in the early days did not have power to transfer the Holy Ghost Some had power to do one thing and some another When the saints heard the first principles of the gospel they saw their simplicity and their harmony with the teach infTH nf Tooiia fhrint Phft pldivrs jonverted with the Bible and though they were illiterate men they were familiar with the spirit and letter of be turned away from their lathers lath-ers house and be disowned by kindred and friends Some did not have the courage to accept the grave I responsibility with all that itim plied but many did accept fol-lowers had is the experience of the Latterday Saints His name was cast out as evil and so have theirs been He was called a winebibber a glutton and a friend of sinners The same bad been the experience of the saints in this ageAnciently the apostles went forth without purse or scrip and proclaimed the message that Christ brought and in this age he elders in similar manner were traveling thousands of miles to convey con-vey the gospel to the children of men They promise also as they did I formerly that those who believed I and accepted should receive the testimony and their promise had been fulfilled The result was the gathering in these mountains of a people who are living in the fear of the Lord and who are carrying out his purpoSEs here on earth with reference to the them The missionary spirit bas always been one of the most gigantic gigan-tic forces of the gospel in its influence influ-ence upon the world In Christs time his disciples went forth two and two preaching the gospel and it was in that way that the truth was spread and converts were multiplied mul-tiplied When the gospel was revealed re-vealed in this age the saints were given to understand that it was not to be a day of many words beta day of warning No sooner did one receive the holy word al the missionary spirit fell upon him and he was anxious to carry on the work of spreading the gospel that all might enjoy its blessings bles-sings They felt that it was a grand and noble work to go out and preach that which would lead men into eternal life They felt that the spirit of the Lord was with them and though they were weak God would strengthen them in their efforts to save souls and they knew that if they were successful leading lead-ing people to belief of the gospel it was because God was with them Referring to the apparent lack of the missionary spirit in the young people here the elder said he thought the want was due to the act that they were surrounded by a inherent influence from that which the youth of other countries encountered encoun-tered but he did not apprehend that the young saints of today were less faithful to the gospel than were their predecessors If put to the test they would i prove > that they held the testimony of the truth and would be faithful I to it This supposition was shown to be justified from the fact that when young elders were sent forth to preach the gospel they were industrious in-dustrious and enthusiastic in their moors The elder exhorted parents to cultivate in their children spirit to be more earnest and faithful in their obedience to the requirements of the gospel The choir sang an anthem and Patriarch John Smith pronounced Use benediction |
