Show TELEGRAPHIC NEWS NOT GUILTY So Say the Jurors in the Star Route Case What will the Public Say Washington 14uyou can ask the jury whether they have any communication communi-cation to make to the court said Judge Wylie to the crier when the criminal court heariog of the star route case was reassembled this morning The crier seon returned with a message that the jury desired to communicate with the court They filed into the courtroom court-room not apparently the worse for their confinement When they were seated the judge said Gentlemen of the jury the court has sent for you for the purpose of enquiring whether you have any communication to make The foreman replied stating that the jury had agreed upon a verdict and a painful pain-ful silence fell upon the courtroom only to be broken by wild shouts of taoplause when in clear tones the voice of the foreman stated that the verdict was Not guilty Immediately the decorum ot the court of justice was forgotten and cheeps reso inded from all quarters of the crowded room Mrs S W Djrsey sprang to her feat end clapping clap-ping her hands while tears streamed down her cheeks and of the other ladies in the room who were silently weeping David o asked to hove the verdict recorded re-corded which was done while daputy marshals were vainly endeavoring to quell the tumult S W Dorsey and Brady were recipients of warm congratulations congratu-lations and as tbey left the court room they were greeted with renewed cheers by the crowd in front of the city bal When order was romewhat restore by reason of the defendants and friends leaving leav-ing the room the judge with a few words discharged jury In the antiroom and halls the jury was beaat by a throng of interested persons prominent among them ba ng the defendants and ifIrE S W Dorsey and MIB Peck who thanked them for the verdict with tears in their eyes As the foreman reached the sidewalk the large crowd assembled there burst into cheere which were renewed es each iuror made his way out of the courthouse court-house The foreman stated to a representative repre-sentative of the Associated Press that five ballots were taken by the jury The first ballot was upon the question of the existence of a conspiraey and the ballot resulted in three for and uine against conspiracy On the second ballot the nine was increased to ten although the vote was then upon the innocence or guilt of the defendents This vote remained re-mained unchanged until about 8 ocoek this evening when ecauHAal was agreed upon News of the verdict in the star route trial reached the department of justice sbortly after 10 oclock this morning At the time the attorney general was in consultation con-sultation with George Bliss When the new was announced he said to Bliss What do YOU thinK of that e I am astonished was the reply thought Borne of the jurors might get muddled on the conspiracy question but I did not anticipate acquittal Well said the attorney general That settles It when twelve men agree the matter is settled I feel satisfied the government has presented the case in the best possible manner Juror ria rigan held out alone for conviction con-viction for a long time He says 11 finally came to the conclusion that eleven ele-ven heads were better than one especially especi-ally when some of the others were educated edu-cated and smart gentlemen A few minutes before we carno into court I went over because I didnt feel like opposing op-posing eleven men so I gave the defendants defend-ants the benefit of the doubt and voted for acquittal Foreman Crane says The jury voted i first on the question as to whether there was any conspiracy It was then proposed pro-posed after some discussion tc vote upon the guilt or innocence of the individuals whicb of course would carry conspiracy con-spiracy with it1 John W Dorsey said Crane headed theist the-ist and we acquitted him the first night then we cams to Vaile and acquitted him Then I think it stood ten to two on Stephen W Dorsey ten to two on Brady and nine to three on Miner That is the way the jury stood up to this morning though I believe there was a change of one vote on Stephen W Dorsey last night making mak-ing it stand eleven to one in his case |
