Show 4 Grand Jury Yisits We learn that the Grand Jury of the present session of the Third District court yesterday made a viSIt of inspection to the Territorial < < penitentiary and Dr S B Youngs lunatic asylum The penitentiary has at present some sixtyfive inmates in-mates The Grand Jurymen were satisfied with its condition aa regards re-gards cleanliness and diet realizing real-izing that Marshal Ireland and his aids are doing as well as possible under existing arrangements However How-ever it appeared very evident that several improvements could be made with very li j tie expense The lack of discipline was deplored and it is impossible to be otherwise under un-der the present system of Indiscriminately Indiscrim-inately keeping together criminal of every grade and age The buildIng build-Ing as it now is has not the facilities facili-ties for separating the prisoners and the consequences are that asiocia tions with those older in crime tend to harden the tenderfoot criminals crim-inals and make them worse instead of their confinement inducing reformation refor-mation The condition of Dr S B Youngs private lunatic asylum was foundto be very satisfactory The care and cleanliness in the management of its twentyfive patients eleven females and fourteen males was gratifying to the grand jurymen Some of its members had visited the asylum previously in a private capacity and the marked improvement improve-ment in its arrangements were commented com-mented upon There are but two violently inclined inmates at present pres-ent both males Bfg Steve a man who came from Montana many years ago whose condition is pitiable piti-able and Sherman who has been a lunatic for nearly nineteen years past |
