Show Give Layton Some Credit By DAVE WIGHAM Layton had just won the state 4A football championship and the Salt Lake papers couldn't get to their typewriters fast enough to point out the fact that it's the first time a school outside of their fair city and county had won the big award. COME ON now, give credit where credit is due. Layton deserved better. True the Salt Lake people have won most of the time. Why shouldn't they? Figure it out, the chips are stacked against us little people out here in farmland. SALT LAKE schools are the biggest in the state, they have the enrollment numbers. The teams that have won the state crowns have been Kearns, East, West and Skyline. All have enrollments of over 2,000 students at the school. Layton has an enrollment of 1,600. Give the Lancers another 400 students and they could probably find some ball players in the group. THE SYSTEM of classification is supposed to even things out, it does for the lower classes, but up in 4A things get hectic. An example, no one expects Ben Lomond to beat Layton in football, why-because Layton is a bigger school. The Scots have almost 1,400 students to the Lancers 1,600, that's a difference of 200 students. But a 3A beating a 4A? Unheard of. Yet the city schools average better than 400 students more than those outside the city? And they brag they dominate? IT JUST kills me that in the face of a great championship cham-pionship claimed by Layton, all the papers had to say how it's the first such fete in history. Layion not only won the title, it beat the best the city had to offer. Not one team, or even two, no the Lancers beat the three best teams the all-mighty Region Three had to offer. IT MIGHT be another six years before a non-city school wins the tnle. As long as (he classifications are set up in their favor, why not? But for now the title is out here in so called Farmland USA. It'll be a long time before another team like Layton .nines ailing, ihev were super. 1 would match this club up iu:iin-l any of the past champions from Salt Lake City. ilVt CREDIT where credit is due. Layton was the !inulvill learn in (lie stale this pasl year, nothing can lie : 1 !' .ni that. |
