Show I r 1 r Editor of The In contemplating the present situa situation situation situation tion with a view to determining the wisest and best manner In which to tomake tomake tomake make up my ballot at the coming gen general general general eral election I am led to believe there is one vital point that of contrast be between between between tween the present and comparatively recent past in Utah giving a valuable lesson of experience which has not yet et received sufficient attention to im impress Impress impress press Its Us real worth upon the minds of or the people hence this communication tion for tor your consideration I frequently hear people say they do donot donot donot not consider political parties but vote ote for men That would be all right If It the tho goodness goodne s of ot the man represented the policy that he will follow But it does not the tha party which nominates and supports him formulates the policy in oases out of ot a thousand There Therefore Therefore Therefore fore in actual tho th policy he will follow Is of at vastly greater im import Import import port than our estimate of ot the Individual ual Experience has taught me that it is much safer to have a II mediocre man iRan representing a wise party pa y policy than a very brilliant man who represents a poor policy polley of governmental conduct It If the brilliant roan man really were wise and without ulterior mo mc motives motives tives it would seem that he would seek to advocate the wiser policy polley even een when under the necessity or ot modifying po political political abstractions Pulley Not Men It Is the policy that will result from the way we cast our vote therefore that requires our chief consideration although in this case we appear to have fairly good men on either side as tho national parties go The pol pot policy icy loy of each or Its Us effect upon the peo people people pie oan can be readily measured by the contrast suggested as shown clearly In Inthe Inthe inthe the subjoined statement of ot facts 1 Ten years ago Utah came Into line with the Republican national pol policy polIcy icy and as a result of the election of ot 1900 the electoral vote of ot this state for forthe forthe forthe the first time was cast for tor a Republican can oan President William McKinley 2 Ten years ago Utah had no na national national standing that could be b regarded as either commendable or enjoyable notwithstanding the tho good quality of ot other her citizens 3 I Ten years ago people who went I to the eastern states from Utah even een eenon on a brief visit were subjected to a measure of contumely and adverse crit criticism both humiliating and injurious They were met with a volume of ot un unpleasant Unpleasant pleasant reminders and unjust accusations accusations accusations These are matters of ot known painful history to those who exper experienced experIenced them 4 Now all this is changed and changed by the attitude of at Utah politically I cally This change for the better Is a matter of recent history the most not notable notable notable able events of Which have transpired during that time in which the present congressional delegation has represented represented Utah 5 Now Utah has baz a most excellent and Influential standing nationally and the good quality of her citizenship is both recognized and appreciated Utah Not nominated Humiliated Now No 6 Now Nov when a man goes from Utah to the eastern centers of ot business ho he heIs hoIs hois Is not subjected to contumely He is not humiliated by unpleasant re reminders reminders reI I minders and unjust accusations He is received as an equal He Is met with the frank and sincere expression that Utah is a great state that the people of ot Utah are a good people that their accomplishments in irrigated and dry farming in the mining and other oUter in tn industries industries are a revelation to the world and that Utah has a splendid congressional congressional congressional delegation in Washington This latter feature is never omitted for tor forthe forthe the national prominence of that dele delegation delegation gation gatlon Is IB uppermost in tn the minds of the people of ot the eastern states when whenever whenever whenever ever Utah Is mentioned 7 Senators Reed Smoot and George GeorgeI I Sutherland and Congressman Joseph Howell by their clean personal record and wise vise political affiliations have been largely instrumental in effecting the blessed blad change But the funda fundamental fundamental mental wisdom of ot the whole work was the good judgment of ot the Utah voters which sustained the party policy rep represented represented represented resented by those men and placed them in that position Without the policy which placed these men on the platform of national Influence ence they would have been mere nonentities and Utah would have reaped little benefit from their In this matter at least it is beyond dispute that the policy Is paramount and the man but sec secondary secondary secondary And thIs matter of ot the line of ot policy that will be of welfare Is la squarely face tace to face with the voter Does the Utah voter want to throw throwaway throwaway throwaway away the advantages brought in the change from ten years Tears ago as here pointed out Influential In National Standing Does the Utah voter want this state to forsake its present Influential na national national national standing by voting directly for tor fora tora a congressman or for tor legislators to elect a senator whose political affiliations will be contrary and therefore i unwise to those beneficial ones now I existing Does the Utah voter want to cut cutaway cutaway cutaway away from the honorable and powerful national administration whose friend friendship friendship friendship ship and counsel are arB the pearl of great greatest greatest greatest est price In the governmental diadem Utah wears D es the Utah voter want to aban abandon abandon abandon don the proud and honored position of ot this states present prestige and fu tu tur glorious national prospects and end sink to the humiliation endured ten rears ears and more ago use uee se are the tho questions that came come up hard and fast to me as IUS a a voter from the vital point of ot view I have sug eted I have studied them closely calmly carefully and am ready to give answer to all In the same mono monosyllable monosyllable monosyllable syllable They are questions which now are up to every voter whether or not be takes them seriously to answer at the thi ballot box on November 8 S and tuft Is why I haVe placed them on paper I believe bellevo that every voter should be informed should take self seriously and In consequence thereof perform well and wisely a voters duty As a for Utah my reply to tho the questions propounded is a II firm firmand firmand and simple no I Iam am for the policy that has made Utah a winner and that will enable her to continue winning honest glory and renown Favors Favor Congressman howell As Aa a for tor Utah I am for forthe forthe forthe the congressman who has faithfully followed that policy In the past and who Is now before us for our support on a continuation of ot that policy polley As a for Utah I am for tor forthe forthe the legislator who will wUl vote for tor the United States senator who has stood firmly for tor that tha t policy and will stand thus so long as he Is a senator from Utah And as a for tor Utah I have havethe havethe havethe the record of progress as a wise monitor for or futuro guidance For ten years the majority of voters have pressed forward In the wis wisdom wisdom dom of ot and in my humble judgment November 8 1910 will find them still marching forward in line with the Re Republican Republican Republican publican national policy polley The musio of ot that policy is of ot a hope not deferred of an anticipation that does not tall fall in blessed realization Keep it going A J L hENRY |
