Show WHAT THE MAYOR WANTS It wIll be a fortunate thing for the city If that suggestion of the ma mayor or shall be acted on by the council and the tha water power at the mouth of the Big Cottonwood conduit be utilized In street lighting for the cIty The power Is tremendous It could provide the most generous degree of Illumination known to any American city And with good administration the cost be reduced to the minimum The establishment ot of comfort sta stations stations in the business portions of the Uy city would be approved generally Like the municipal lodging the tho mayor has not yet recommended It answers one of the imperative demands de demands mands of a big city And one to which big cities do not respond quIte so generally gen generally or so promptly as they should As to the general increase of salaries a difficult problem has there been broached b by Mayor Branford Bransford It If councilmen could be paid about three thousand dollars a year each a reduction reduction tion In other expenditures largely over oer overtopping topping that total amount would al almost almost most certainly be noted because the better pay would attract to office bet better ter business men and aud they could at atford atford ford to give more ot of their time to their public duties than should be expected of HI the people who now man manage manage age the city But either there be a limit to the amount paid to general officers and their help or those officers and their help should be required to render ronder to their city dt and not to their party the services for which the city pa pays s It will not readily be forgotten that in inthe inthe the campaigns city ot of officials almost totally abandoned their public work for labors in the interest of certain candidates And afterward they devoted much more time to elect electIng electing Ing their favorites than they dId dd to the duties laid upon them by their public obligations their pay and their oaths Undoubtedly the ma mayor or is right in warning the council against granting uncompensated franchises to any cor corporation corporation It needs no special shrewd shrewdness ness mess to see that franchises have a avalue avalue value to the companies asking for them that they represent something surrendered by the people Conse Consequently that the company receiving them should pay the public for the rights the powers and the opportunities ties conferred |
