Show I SO TIlE THE PEOPLE MAY KNOW I IA FTER years of the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune have at last agreed on something They AFTER A are united In an effort to o t the bo boxing ng contest being held in Utah Inasmuch as the circulations ot of the News and Tribune are so 50 small that but a few people know their attitude The can will give them the advantage of a real cIrculation and reproduce their sentiments Here they ar PROM FROM THE TRIBUNE OP OF TUESDAY MORNING Mr Tex Rickard assures the Salt Lake public that the fight will actually be held at Saltair Jim Jeffries says as positively that the fight Is to be held In San Francisco or Oakland Governor Spry is quoted as say saying saying ing that the fight shall not be held In the state ot of Utah In California the statement a is made that the governor ot of that state will look upon the fight aaa as a mere boxing contest and will not Interfere From these conflicting statements we judge that the fight probably will be held In San Francisco or We have never considered It at all likely that It would be held here We have not the sporting population to support an event ot of this kind As Johnson stated In his indifferent attitude towards Salt Lake or elsewhere it makes no differ difference difference ence to him where It is held so long as it goes where the most mone money is to be had Unquestionably the most money for this sort of a contest Is to be had In San Francisco rather than in Salt Lake for San Francisco is an overshadowing Immensely larg larger r city comparatively it has Immense sums available for sporting purposes and it has a population to draw upon beyond all comparison In excess se of th that t which Is here or hereabouts We do not believe that the holding of this event here would be to the advantage of Salt Lake even from a financial standpoint It would take away a very large sum earn of money and It would call for the expenditure of considerable sums to keep order and to protect the city from the large class of toughs that usually are an accompaniment of such events Nor do we believe that there sufficient Is assur assurance nce that the contest will be a genuine one There are of course 1 a good many things favorable to making this a genuine contest but after all money talks and In spite ot of the race an antipathy antipathy that Is likely to be engendered by this that is pretty certain to make trouble wherever the fight is held we believe that money will determine the result As for boxing contests simply as ma ot of exercise of physical trainIng ot o I drill In the endurance of punishment and in the exercise of all the muscular r power of cf the body nothing can be finer fine r than such an exhibit honestly and fairly conducted not for gain and not attracting g a lot of outlaws and outcasts as accompaniments But the prize fight as it has come to be conducted is simply n a farce from the standpoint of athletic sport t and ot of athletic prowess It Is money that does it all Money determines the whole matter including the decision Salt Lake will lose nothing worth the having it If it loses this fight and we belIeve that it will wUl lose it in spite of the fervent protestations of Mr Rickard that th at we will have the fight pulled off here If at Saltair of course the fight would be outside of the city jurisdiction and aud In any event the declaration that the fight shall not take place In Utah the law being very distinct and positive in prohibition ot of this sort fiOrt of a tight fight ought to be and probably will be cone of the whole matter FROM THE DESERET NEWS OP OF MONDAY EVENING The blare of trumpets and display ot of redheaded letter now being employed to resuscitate reports that the Johnson prize fight take place in Salt Lake need not be viewed Wry seriously serio Those familiar with the art ot of working up interest In events of this character know that it Is 15 all stage thunder and mimic lightning merely a part ot of the prearranged program As every one who Is at all familiar with stage management Is aware there must be a certain amount of excitement a certain number of assertions and a certain number ot of denials worked up to generate the necessary necessary essary excitement for an event of this thi s character Special wires must be kept kep t hot the sporting editors must be given opportunities to enrich the language by coining a number ot of new phrases and three or four clUes cities must be induced to think they are bidding against each other for something ot of supreme Importance bu but t so far as Salt Lake Is concerned it Is all sound and fury signifying nothing When Governor Hughes of New York said the fIght would not take place in that state that settled It and the pro promoters promoters ot of the mill had to turn their faces face s to the west where It is supposed there Is less regard for tor lawt law order and the morals of the young We fancy Governor dictum will be found just as effective as Governor Hughes and we can think ot of no sheriff in Utah who would disregard the governors simple reminder r that the laws of the state must be en enforced enforced forced Mr Ir Rickard who on the surface Is striving so hard for Salt Lake Is a gentleman who in the art of workIng up advertisements stands alone and unexcelled The coterie of bankers and business men whom he quotes as standing back backof backof of him lm no doubt the clearing house made this subject a special order of the day are doubtless also actuated by the most deserving of motives from the standpoint of drawing attention to Salt Lake City but we marvel that there is a kind of advertising just as powerful and potent and that is the news flashed to the four corners of the world that the Utah statutes are rigidly against prize fighting exhibitions that the Utah authorities propose to uphold the law just as New NewYork NewYork York authorities did that notoriety is not fame and that all the money and advertising an event of thIs kind would bring to Utah could not compensate for the objectionable element th the sports and the criminals that It would attract to say nothing of an open disregard of the law With the statutes staring them so plain plainly In the face and with the statement ot of the Governor ot of the state backing them uP it Is a marvel that any people of repute should persevere In the attempt not only to defy both but the moral sentiment of 10 o great a part of the community n |
