splendid did achievements as a result r of meeting fairly and squarely every that has hus arisen and of taking an unequivocal stand on tha right side of all aU questions of vital Interest and importance to tho the peo people people pie We e are arc proud of the fact that every great reform during the last quarter of a century has won its victory under the Re Ho Republican publican banner bannerWe bannerWe We Ve believe bellee that the Republican party will continue to lead in all such move movements movements ments and will be able to fulfill the wishes and expectation of the people In the fu future future future ture as It has in the past pst We are now confronted With a great moral issue upon which the people o of f Utah have ha declared themselves in a man manner mannEr manner ner which we cannot mistake nor ignore Stronger than any platform declaration stronger even thin the ordinary vote of ot tIle the people ou on election day because It I Imade ts made their personal signatures over ovar of this state have demanded of or the legislature now in session tho the abo aba abolition abolition of the liquor traffic We assert that this is no n new question brought up for the annoyance of any fa tion or party It is the result gf years of I agitation and has extended to every part of tho Union nion And with satisfaction wo we note that nil ail the pioneer states in the adoption of prohibition Maine Kansas Iowa and North Dakota are Republican We therefore declare the tho enactment of or ofa ora ofa a prohibition law by the present legisla legislature legislature ture turo to be necessary to the welfare of the tile Republican party in Utah and pledge our out ourselves selves to tho the perpetuation pe as a n pol policy polIcy icy to the party in the state of Utah We Ve believe In the constitutional right of petition and hold that the welfare of the Republican publican He party in Utah requires favor favorable favorable favorable able action upon these petitions which represent an a overwhelming majority of the Republican voters of the state Any AllY other course by b a practically unanimous Republican legislature cannot be excused nor successfully defended and will wilt un result In Democratic D ascend ency at the next election We Ve heartily Indorse the action actio of the house of representatives In passing by an almost unanimous vote the bill bm Introduced by Representative Cannon on this sub subject subject subject thus responding to the wishes of the fhe people and promoting the best interests of et the Republican party We Ve deplore the action of the state sen sea senate senate ate in defeating this worthy measure with without without without out permitting the friends of the bill a chance chanco to be heard beard before the senate com corn committee committee having It under consideration Wo We regret the departure of the senate from Its established rules of procedure and the violation of parliamentary practice practice practice tice by the president of the tile senate in stifling debate upon the issues Involved In an open discussion of the measure We are unalterably opposed to any com corn compromise compromise promise on this Issue as the people veople of ot Utah are tired of the high license and reg regulation regulation regulation and do not need the intermediary process of county local option and any anything anythIng anything thing short of statewide prohibition will willbo willbe willbe be bo looked upon as a concession to the tho li Ii liquor liquor quor interests which the Republican party is under no obligations to make and will utterly fall in satisfying the matured judgment and intelligent demand of or the people as represented by their petitions We oppose and denounce the policy polley of the InterMountain Republican upon this question as misrepresenting the attitude of the Republican party of at the state and call upon the state Republican committee to Insist upon the abandonment of the present line of conduct of that paper or to announce its repudiation as the official organ or an of the party We Ye most emphatically resent the declaration declaration declaration of certain members opposing prohibition upon the floor of the house that the he Republican party is recreant to Its It leaders If It fails falls to carry out an alleged agreement with the liquor Interests to pre prevent prevent prevent vent or postpone prohibition We c deny that the Republican party is in any sense a party to such a compact or orin in any way responsible for Immoral alliances alllan es entered into by usurpers of leadership in inthe Inthe inthe the Republican party part We believe that the apparently y Unfriendly ly attitude of the senate lion Uon Is due largely to misrepresentations made mado by friends of the liquor traffic prominent among whom are appointees of the federal government residing In Salt Lake City We denounce the persistent and pernicious ious lotte interference in politics of these fed federal federal eral erat appointees as a flagrant violation of or orthe the order Issued by b the president of or the United States forbidding such conduct un under under under der penalty of ot removal We e therefore memorialize that distin distinguished distinguished patriot and champion of the right the Honorable William H Taft who on the of next month will ill become in fact the president of the United States to enforce this order In the state of Utah for the following reasons I 1 Because the said federal appointees by posing as the leaders of the Republican can party in Utah have hae usurped the tile rights and functions of the Republican state committee the th official head of the Republican party in the state of Utah 2 Because the said Eald federal appointees I by b the improper use of state patronage and legislation are building up the fac factional factional factional political machine ma within the Re Republican RepUblican publican party part the nature and tendency of which if not now checked and de destroyed destroyed destroyed will ill result In irreparable Injury to the Republican party in Utah and the loss of a Republican United States sena senator senator tor tar and representative In the halls of con congress congress gress itt fit the tue next election 3 Because the said ld federal appointees by their to the liquor deal dealers dealers ers and their consequent opposition to prohibition have hae precipitated a crisis In Inthe Inthe Inthe the Republican party of Utah which makes this convention a necessity and em emphasizes emphasizes emphasizes the almost unanimous demand of or orthe the tho people for Immediate legislation In fa favor favor favor vor of strict statewide prohibition We Vo most mo t respectfully call the attention of our Jur honorable and distinguished representatives representatives at Washington to these mat matera lers era and earnestly ask their cooperation in the removal or suppression of these ob obstacles obstacles obstacles which have Interposed themselves between the tho party and the tho people We respectfully memorialize his excel lency lenc the governor and the honorable members of the Utah legislature who are Identified with the Republican party to grant to their the people of the state the relief prayed for In the petitions which over people have signed slimed We ask this for the good of tho the Re Republican Republican Republican publican party for the welfare of the state and In the interest of clean poli poll politics tics and morality And we further invite all Republicans in Utah regardless of their affiliations heretofore to join us In this battle for the rights of the tho masses and a square deal for all the people of Utah |
