Show WALKOUT W AT BULLER BREWERY IS i NOT A STRIKE A CALL OUT To The Tho Salt Lake Inke Herald With reference to a strike of ot the brewery workers employed by b the Buller Brewing company com pan there appeared an article in your our this morning In which Mr Buller said that he hall had never been notified of ot the proposed action of ot the union men In his plant and conse consequently had no knowledge of ot their tion to make a call out If It you oU will per permit permit mit us space we would like to state these facts Mr Ir Bullers company and the Brewery Yorkers Workers which Includes In the tion Brewery Drivers No Brewery Workers No W t and Bottlers No are ar in a contract which does not expire un until untIl til March 1 1909 By the terms of ot this contract the Buller brewer Is a closed shop and only union drivers are under Us provisions to be employed About two months ago ao Buller employed td Joe Christensen a driver not belonging to the union Repeatedly a committee from the drivers union has waited on Mr Ir Buller and called his attention to the terms of ot the contract At all times Mr r Buller assured these committees that the matter would be attended to without lelay In fact he gave us a standoff whenever we called on him himAt himAt At last patience ceased to be bea a virtue and we wrote to the international executive tlc tive board with headquarters at Cincin Cincinnati Cincinnati nati and obtained from It permission to order a n callot of ot the union men cm em employed In the thc Huller plant This sion slon was received by b us last Friday and we notified Mr Buller that he had until Saturday to discharge Christensen and employ a union man tour four of or whom com competent in every respect res pee tare are out of or work In this city Mr ir Buller Briller refused to dis discharge discharge charge Christensen and furthermore stated that he would not discharge him under any circumstances Thereupon we put the fn force torce and the union men employed in the Bul Buller Buller ler establishment responded and walked out of or the plant This Is not a strike It Is merely i I refusal of ot the union men to work with nonunion men there is a contract which calls for tor a closed shop Heretofore we have had no difficulty in a matters with any of the theother theother other breweries but Mr Buller has so often oCten manifested a spirit of ot friendliness toward us and just as often orten has gone Con back ba k on his promises that we came to the conclusion that the for tor the climax had been reached Unless the matter is settled before Fri Friday Friday day night we shall call all the attention of oC the Salt Lake Federation of ot Labor to the existing conditions condition If the controversy still remains unadjusted the Salt Lake Federation no doubt will ask the State Federation to take action Signed II T LIVESEY CHARLES LARCH JOHN Committee from Local Executive Board BoardS Salt S lt Lake Aug Au 11 n |
