The escape of the Van Luong brothers began when Trong left Vietnam in 1980. Hai and Long escaped in March of 1981 and were joined about six months later by Tien and Binh. The five brothers, front row left to right. Trong, Long and Tien, and back row, Binh and Hai, are studying English in preparation for their new lives. They have six other members of their family still living in Vietnam.
