Show The Difference A Year Makes It's an old cliche but the saying what a difference a year makes can certainly be taken different ways in sports. FIRST OF ALL there's a little irony up at Bountiful High Seems like last year the football team on the hill was accused by some of their fans of running the football too much where was the forward pass. This year those same fans are starting to voice concern over the fact that the run has almost disappeared from the Bountiful offense. KEEP IN MIND the coaches know what they are doing. No one said much when the Braves beat Layton and Granger Gran-ger but in both Bountiful losses the accusations are that the offense doesn't run enough. I'm not taking sides in this one at all it just seems a little funny to hear the two different cries over the past two seasons. Woods Cross football stands to make a big move this vear over last, in the fact that the Cats now realize that the top four clubs go to state. Last year only three went Many experts feel that 3-2 might win the league and that 2-3 would probably get a club at least a tie for a playoff berth. That being the case the Cats can get into the state picture with a win over East this Friday. SPEAKING OF the difference in a year do you realize the score of the junior varsity game last year between Woods Cross and Bountiful. Let's just say Custer did a better job at the Little Big Horn than the Cats did in that battle. Yet here it is one year later and those same Cats shut out the Braves 23-0. Last year in this region one could predict the winner of each game because there were some dominant teams. All during the pre-season hoopla the coaches tried to tell us that the region this year was very balanced. Come on coaches get serious we knew better right? So what happens hap-pens on opening night, the three teams that were supposed to lose didn't. Let's face it, anyone in this league can win, and anyone can lose. LAST YEAR the region title was decided in the last contest between Bountiful and Davis when both sides f.wMMiiwMi;ii entered the battle undefeated. Now this year is a different story, no one can tell you right now who the champions will be but you'll get the same answer from all the coaches in regards to that title teams record. It's a safe bet to say no team will be unblemished. Speaking of records can anyone recall the last time the Viewmont football team lost a game on the Viking's home field? This year the Viewmont bunch have a 2-2 record, both wins on the home field and both losses on the foreign stuff. A year ago was almost the same story with the Vikes beating Woods Cross and Highland at home. The last loss was to Davis exactly one year ago in the opening of league play. Their final loss to Highland was at Woods Cross High in the playoffs. BOUNTIFUL WILL try to put an end to that string of victories this Friday. Viewmont has several players who will be playing in their third Bountiful varsity rivalry. Kurt Mathews is one of those seniors. As a sophomore Kurt caught the winning touchdown on the last play of the game, as juniors the Braves won so this is the deciding game. |
