Show Viliingo C2ouo Trouble VJiih Provo ulldogo By DAVE WIGHAM Just when it looked like the Vikings had found themselves and were playing good solid basketball they ran into the powerhouse of South Provo. THE VIKES were impressive impres-sive in their wins over Murray and Orem, but then fell flat against the Bulldog five on the opponents court last week. Against Murray the Vikes showed the type of ball game that has them rated as the top team in the region. Each and every Vike contributed in the victory. OREM, WHO many say will give Provo a strong race for the title of that region, was next up for the young but improving Viking squad. This was probably the best overall effort so far this year by the Viewmont team as they easily handled the Tigers. At this time the Vikes were high emotionally, they were looking forward to going and playing the Bulldogs. To play Provo on your own court is disasterous but to play them in Provo is suicidal. A COMBINATION of great play by the Bulldogs and not so good play for the Vikes provided the outcome a victory vic-tory for the Provo bunch. During the week though the Vikes continued to keep their optimism high as well as their spirit. Going into league action the Vikes are full of confidence and desire to win the title this year. KEVIN Walker, whom the coaches have been high on all year, is starting to score around 20 points a game. "Walker can score anytime and anywhere he wants, if he puts his mind to it," is the way that Viking Coach Jim Cleverly puts it. Tim Eden has played well all along for the Vikes and continues to put forth his best ability. Give a coach five Tim Edens and you'd have a highly competitive squad. Eden has been the leading rebounder for the Vikings so far. COURT Wilkins is all desire and hustle, along with talent that is. Court has the ability to play both forward and center for Viewmont which allows Coach Cleverly to substitute sub-stitute freely. It's been the play of Wilkins that has enthused the young Vikes in their pre-season efforts. Senior guard Lowell Oswald is fast becoming the type of leader the Vikes need at the backcourt area. His ball hand ling and shooting are needed if the Vikes are to become champs. ADD TO Oswald the names of Mark Lalli and Todd Bur-ningham Bur-ningham and the Vikes have a guard for almost every situation. situa-tion. Mark, with his outside shooting can destroy a zone defense and Todd is an excellent ex-cellent dribbler with good speed to break any type of press. If the big man Dave Pearce, starts to play the type of ball that Coach Cleverly expects of him then the Vikes could turn into an awesome unit. Dave is starting out slow this year but if he catches fire, the race will be for second place. GOING INTO pre-season Coach Cleverly wanted his young team to gain experience and to play the best squads in the state. No one can argue that they haven't accomplished those goals. Their next goal, the region championship, and there are five teams who will argue that, dw |
