Show Looking Ahead To A Better 1977 The year ending was a hard one for millions of Americans, and most look ' forward to a better 1977. ' 1976 WAS a year which : began with economic hope ' and ended with experts won-. won-. dering whether the economy was really recovering. It was ; a political year in which a - Democrat who carried but 23 : states won the White House. - It was the first time in over i 100 years a candidate from : the Deep South was nominat- ; - ed (July in New York) and ; won (November 2). : FOR AMERICANS it was a I year of peace, of which there j - have been few in recent ; times. The Mideast was rela-i rela-i ; tively quiet except for Lebanon. : But time after time during the year there were ominous : warnings of growing com- munist military strength. ; THE YEAR 1977 promises 1 new economic hope, federal r reorganization, and much : news about new faces, new : policies, new approaches. : Because they are new that ; doesn't mean new programs : will be better. Too often the I American people have been misled by big hopes, dreams and promises of new ad-t ad-t ministrations. ;": ONLY TIME will tell :": whether 1977 will be a year of : sound, solid innovation and accomplishments or whether it will be the opening year of : politics and over-spending as ;, usual. . At the outset, one should be hopeful, for congressional ' reforms as well as federal reorganization - and perhaps lower taxes. |
