He started going on cattle drives at a very young age with his father's ranch hands and has continued con-tinued to raise cattle ever since. He was working for the Bureau of Reclamation during the building of Flaming Gorge Dam and in 1963 when the dam was finished, one of his jobs was to move his father's and a neighbor's ranch before the dam was filled. This job created many interesting stories. Lunk still lives on the ranch he and his wife, Betty Lorraine, moved onto in 1960. He has less horses but considerably more cattle. Although MS limits his physical abilities, he still oversees the operation opera-tion of two ranches, his own and one that is a partnership between he V" 7 ' LunkJarvie and his sisters near Manila. He loves watching calf roping and rodeo and his grandchildren. In fact, his granddaughter, Christi Gardiner, is one of this year's 4H princesses. Bascom rigging 4o celebrate 75th year The 75th year of rodeo's first one-hand bareback rigging will be celebrated at Vemal's Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. The event will also honor the name of the late rodeo champion, Earl W. Bascom, who thought up, designed and made the now famous one-handed rigging back in 1924. "Bascom 's Rigging," as it was called, was first used some 75 years ago and has since become the standard stan-dard equipment for riding bareback broncs at professional rodeos throughout the world. Before it became a widely accepted accept-ed way of riding broncs, rodeo contestants con-testants were using two hands to ride bareback. Earl Bascom, who was born in Vernal in 1906, gained fame as a rodeo champion having been inducted in-ducted into four Halls of Fame, and received international recognition for his rodeo equipment designs. Later in life, Bascom became internationally in-ternationally acclaimed as an artist and sculptor. Before he passed away in 1995, be was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London, England. Bascom's design came from a culmination of many years of bareback bare-back riding experience. He started rodeoing in 1916 and over the years had made and used a variety of bareback riggings. Bascom designed his one-hand rigging in Stirling, Alberta Canada on the family ranch. He took a section of rubber belting, belt-ing, discarded from a threshing machine ma-chine and cut out the entire rigging in one piece. The handhold was folded back and riveted to the main body of the rigging with dee rings riveted to each side of the latigos. This rigging became rodeo's first one-hand bareback rigging when it was used at the Raymond Stampede in Alberta Canada in July of 1924. That same year, Bascom refined his design making another rigging out of leather and rawhide. With sole leather for the rigging body and strips of leather with rawhide sewn between for the handhold, it had sheepskin glued under the handhold to protect the knuckles. . .. In the 1930s when the Cowboy Turtle Association (forerunner of today's PRCA) was formed, "Bascom's Rigging" was the Cadillac Cadil-lac of the industry and became professional pro-fessional rodeo's standard design. The old-fashioned petunias that grew by the wed each year not only smelled nice but also provided tweet nectar from the mall ends of their tiny trumpets. Honeysuckle vines climbed on the porch, spilling our their delightful perfume, and the Invasive Bouncing Betty provided Its own brand of sweetness. sweet-ness. Even marigolds and chrysanthemums evoke fond rec ollections. While snapdragons and pansles rationed out their subtle scents, garden gar-den pinks, stocks and carnations boldly advertised their spicy enticements. A blooming alfalfa field on a warm day offered another aromatic treat. AH of this and I've not mentioned roses, the champions of floral essences.
