Show Vernal cowboy artist on west Texas cattle drive Vernal Express Wednesday, November 16, 1994 9 Vernal native and cowboy artist, Earl Bascom, recently worked longhorn cattle on the Shahan Ranch in west Texas and received honors at the art show during the Texas Longhorn Quincentennial celebration. Bascom's bronze sculpture sculp-ture "The American Longhorn 1494-1994" was declared the most authentic example of a classical Texas longhorn steer. A life-size version of this Bascom bronze has been commissioned by the International Texas Longhorn Association to be placed in state capitals across the west The cattle drive and art exhibit were organized to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first cattle brought by Christopher Columbus to the Americas in 1494. By the end of the Civil War, descendants of these first Spanish cattle had expanded ex-panded to a herd numbering in the millions. The massive herd of wild, long homed cattle quickly dwindled to thousands and were rounded up and trailed to the railroads for shipping ship-ping in eastern markets. Today, Texas longhorn cattle are again making a come back with an expanding herd approaching 200,000 head. One of the largest Texas longhorn herds in the world is found at Shahan's Longhorn Ranch in west Texas. The Bascom family entered the cattle industry almost 140 years ago when Earl's grandfather, Joel A. Bascom, crossed the plains in a covered wagon as a Mormon pioneer pio-neer and started the 101 Ranch on Ashley Creek between Naples and Vernal. The Texas Longhorn Quincentennial celebration included activities at the "Alamo Village," a western movie town built on the Shahan Ranch in 1958 for the John Wayne movie, "The Alamo" and used as a set for over 100 Hollywood movies including "Lonesome Dove" and the new mini-series, "Texas." Highlighting the Quincentennial celebration was the staging and filming of a cattle drive trailing Texas steers over the mesquite covered cov-ered countryside and through town. The trail boss of the cattle drive was television actor and countrywestern singer, John Schneider. At age 88, Earl Bascom was the oldest cowboy working on this historic his-toric roundup and the only cowboy representing the state of Utah. Plans arc being made for this Texas longhorn cattle drive to become an annual event. u si L " n n To send our undefeated, stupendous, miraculous Uintah Utes off to the State Championship in fashion... we offer the following suggestions: f J r -t- ntnrfn TW'Iott orfl Tariff n PtTrrVTT : Tr-rrfr IfV WIvMAfrW m V i J III! w J'' w mmmm mm w mmm Utes have Entire Stock T's, Hats Sweats, Flannels off J Entire Stock Girls and Juniors Sportswear off m V Will Holler Ll.i.F, Entire Stock Kids and Juniors Sportswear AI??.- SF!K. j4fi3bk. off J Utes are made of Entire Stock Steel Jeans Girts & Juniors off m ' Utes Entire Stock g Mos, Ladies & Kids Footwear u ond socks O off Don't Give Us FLAK.
