Editorial Family Prayer nURING year t this centennial the Teachings of President Brigham Young have been greatly emphasized. One of the important fundamentals he taught was family prayer. It was his belief that every day a man and his wife should gather their children about them and kneel to the Almighty. together in the home in humble-prayeBrigham Young set the example. Every day he gathered his family about him in worship. Brigham Young insisted that all members of his family attend these prayers. At one time it hecame necessary for him to speak to members of his family about the failure of some to be present when the hour of devotion arrived. Said he: "I do not wish to complain of you without- - cause, but I have noticed at prayer time only a portion' of My family has been present. Some have beenvisiting a sister, a neighbor, a mother, or a relative. One is changing her dress, another her shoes, another getting ready to go to the theater, another has gone to see Mary and another to see Emily. etc. "There is no doubt but that my family, one and all, will acknowledge that my time is as precious to me as theirs is to them. When the time appointed for our family devotion and prayer comes, I am expected to be there; and no public business, no matter how important, has been able to influence me to forego the fulfillment of this sacred duty' I owe to you, to myself and to God. "Now I have a few words of counsel for my Tandly which I shall expect them to receive kindly and obey. Namely, when prayer time comes that they all be at home. If any of them are visiting, that they be at hotile at half past six o'clock in the evening, to be ready to bow down before the Lord to make their acknowledgements to Him for His kindness and mercy and long suffering towards us. Your strict attendance to my wishes in this respect will give joy to the heart of your husband and father." Commenting on this subject, Dr. John A. Widtsoe of the Council of the Twelve wrote one time as follows: "Private prayer has been enjoined upon us but we are also commanded to pray as families and in public meetings. A united prayer, one in which many join, comes' with and power before the Lord. In union there greater strength -. is strengthIThe family is the ultimate unit of the organized church. It represents the patriarchal order which is the order of heaven. All members of this unit should be conscious of the family needs and should regularly and unitedly petition the Lord for His blessings. Unless this is done family ties are weakened and the blessings of the Lord may be withheld. A happier understanding prevails among families who pray together, therefore every effort should be made to engage the family regularly in prayer." 1 The holding of family prayer is a powerful influence in every home. When the Savior was among the Nephites He taught them to have family. prayer. He urged all to pray lest they fall into temptition. Then He said, "Pray in your families that your wives and your children may be blessed." This advice given by the Savior, Himself, should be heeded by every family. In this day of great temptation we need all the stiength we can muster, and we may gain that strength through righteous living an& sincere prayer. , - President George Albert Smith as painted by Lee Greene Richards.
