'Assistant man Sgr murders" have ushered in, a new en of terror on the plantation of Netherlandish coloniser In the Dutch East Indies, Java and the tobacco region around Dell and Sumatra, are now styled the "Dutch Wild West by newspapers here. Malicious burning of sugar cane fields formerly was the only form of - revolt in which the natives of Java and Sumatra expressed their feelings. Life used to be as safe for the white colonist as in Holland. During recent months, however a series of murders of assistant managers on sugar, cor fee or tobacco plantations, hare Xnehtened all white residents. The ''assistant manager" is 'the man who deals directly with native labor on the plantations, and bis cess Is based on his ability to set the coolies to efficient work. Three rea sons, it is said, account for "assistant manager murdera" First, an ins id nous bolshevist propaganda among the coolies, which continues to spread though the main, leaders are Jailed second, the fact that soma assistant managers beat the coolies and then are killed as a matter of revenge, and third, "penal sanction," which consists of jailing coolies who run away from contract work arid taking them back to serve the rest of their work after their Jail term is over. Red propagandists are coolie imagination with tales of tyranny, quoting cases of such oeatuig and "penal sanction." Most coolies are armed with some sort of a knife or dagger, while most plantation managers believe It wser riot to carry arms. The white men usually are attacked from the back with a knife and killed Instantly. The exact number of such murders Is unknown, as'the Java police keep them secret. over-heati- AMERICAN'S ENRICH FRANCE. American visitors PARIS WP). If motorists on tour wilt proceed on their trip with some sense of lelsure-nes- s, much of the strain which causes and nervousness and Irritability consequently endangers health will on motorists avoided. In be fact, j j AlSPssskk 'f the New ere9 The Sunday Motorist Motoring Is of Itself a healthy sort of experience, since It takes one out doors and into the open country usually. Everything about touring is favorable to good health or should be. And when on such a tour it is especially important that ail members of the party keep In splendid physical condition. This much desired result can be readily upset by violating various rules of health. For Instance, a diet of "hot dogs" Is not especially conducive to keeping the digestive apparatus In tha best of condition. Various other questionable things to eat are being continually brought to the attention of the motorist by thousands of stands that have been built along the highway by people who are Interested to make a little extra money out of the touring public. There are a number of health matters which people going on long automobile tours may well take into consideration. A toothache la a bad enough experience under any circumstances. It is doubly disastrous to one on an auone tomobile trip. Consequently should visit a' dentist before going on besure that one's a long tour, and teeth are in good condition. If there be to any possibility of goappears ing Into a section of the country where contagious diseases prevail, one should certainly secure artificial immunity by vaccination. Inasmuch as an annual health examination is a good habit to have, seeing to this matter Just preceding a long automobile trip Is perhaps the best time. If In spite of all precautions one becomes 111 on an automobile trip, it is important that dependable medical advice be secured. There are a few simple medicines which it may be well to secure before starting out. One's own physician will undoubtedly recommend what fhould be taken along. Among other things, a small first aid outfit often comes in handy, and one should have some instruction as to how to use it in case of sickness or accident Sufficient slr?p Is always essential to the best of health, and this is es- necially true on a motoring trip. Plans should be made, so that the motorists can have fairly regular hours for retiring and getting up, and sufficient time for at least eight hours' uninterrupted sleep. If it is impossible to secure comfortable as possible beds, as much comfort should be sought- - in whatever arrangements are made. The matter of clothing has something to do with health on a motor trip. During the summer the tourists should dress as comfortably as possible and as informally, in regard to sleep, it is desirable that loose hygienic night garments be worn Instead of what is a rather common practice,; especially among camping tourists, of sleeping in their day clothes. Regularity in eating three meals will help to keep the motorist well. In the diet may be included at least a quart of milk dally, a substantial amount of vegetables and certainly a considerable amount of fruit, preferably raw, Meats, eggs, cheese and nuts need not be avoided, but should be consumed in limited quantities.
