Leather-wood Leather-wood of Salt Lake, district attorney for the Third judicial district, was nominated for congress in the Second Sec-ond district, and Joseph Howell ot Logan, present congressman at large from Utah, was nominated for con-i gress in the First district yesterday by the conventions held for the respective re-spective districts in Salt Lake ks had been expected, both conventions! were among the most enthusiastic in the history of the party in the state. Until the ballot had been taken and the totals made, the nominatious were in doubt In the Second district E. O. Leath erwood, Harry S. Joseph and James DeVine, all of Salt Lake county made the race for the nomination for the house of representatives and the con. test which followed was close. Two1 ballots were necessary to decide thel nominee In the Flrt district the names of Joseph Howell of Logan, j Jacob Johnson oi Spring City, both cougressmtn at this time; Judge A. H. Christenson of Manti, YV D. Cund land of Mount Pleasant, B C. Call1 of Biigham City, and T. C Hoyt of Kanab, were placed before the con vention, but Mr Howell won the nom inatlon with ease There was practically a complete representation present from cach of the twenty-three counties making up the First congressional district when! the convention was called to order at the Utah theater csterday morning I at 11 o'clock by Mosiah Evans ot Utah count, who acted in the absence ab-sence of the state officers who were: at the Second congressional convention. conven-tion. Mr. Evans read the call of the con-ention con-ention announcing that there were 1195 accredited delegates and then announced an-nounced the officers of the temporary' organization. George Halverson of Weber county was named as temporary tempo-rary chairman , Wilford Da . Iron county, first vice chairman; Thomas Smart, Cache county, second vice chairman; N C Poulson, Sevier county, secretary; T. H. Burton, Juah county, assistant secretary; Joseph T. Atkins, Washington county, sergeant-at-arms, and Elroy Wllkins. Sanpete county, assistant sergeant-at-arms. Mr, Halverson was introduced, ana in a brief but pointed speech declared de-clared the Republican party to be the greatest political party in the country. He said the Progressives and Democrats stood on platforms as far apart as the two poles and that on the morning after election the members of this alliance would come to the realization that the people of Utah would not tolerate the union which ho said was formed solely to fool the people. When nominations were called tor. William Craig of Ogden placed the name of William Glasmann before the convention in a neat little speech When he had concluded, Mr. Glasmann Glas-mann got the floor and said the presenting pre-senting of his name came as a sur-i sur-i prise to him and was without his I consent, as his loyalty to one of the candidates before the convention made It impossible for him to sanction sanc-tion any effort to place him in the contest, and he requested that hla name be withdrawn, which was done. While the convention was waiting for committee reports. Mr. Glasmann was called on to address those present pres-ent and by unanimous consent he was inited to the platform. He said he was glad to get back home and pleased with the welcome extended him. He was heartily applauded First District. In the congressional contest in the Second district, the first ballot re suited In Mr. Leatherwcod falling to get a sufficient number of votes to be nominated Previous to the taking tak-ing of the ballot the Joseph workers announced their candidate would receive re-ceive 129 votes on the first ballot or six more than necessary to nominate hen the result was announced i seemed to dishearten the Joseph workers while it put more energy into the Leatherwood supporters. The first ballot resulted as follows. Devine 25 9-22. ith the announcement of the vote the convention broke into cheers for Mr Leatherwood and cries of "speech" came from all parte of the hall He was escorted to tho stage and made a short address The committee selected to conduct the congressional campaign in the Second district is as follows; Salt Lake county Dr. F. Clark Davis county Senator John W Thornley, W v. Evans. The convention empowered the committee to fill all vacancies and ad I journed sine die at 4.52 o'clock in the afternoon First District.
