Show SEARCHERS OF GENEALOGY aal As I 1 have been gathering genealogies and historical hlat orical data of my ances tore and in doing so have visited england wales and ireland and have been somewhat successful in getting considerable information and believing that it might be of interest to many of the numerous readers of the Dic sERET NEWS I 1 cheerfully submit the following statement at the general registration office at somerset house london I 1 learned that the daltons dalfons came over to england from normandy and that sir walter dalton moved to ireland and settled calling the place mont dalton this was in the twelfth century from this house sprang the dalstone of ireland so bo I 1 went over to dublin got an interview with the aXi stant register general at the charle mout house rutland square by the name of robert E matheson Mathe 9 11 eon whom I 1 found to be a very genial i gentleman I 1 learned from him the rules of the office relative to sear searching ehing the records tor for sur surnames namee ot of friends A fee of al 1 is exacted by the office for foi sixty four hours 1 time or the fractional party thereof the six hours being considered a days work As I 1 expected to collect quite a number of names and knowing that I 1 would have to employ clerks to make extracts I 1 concluded to got get as many as could work judiciously at one time so contracted with five competent and ex perien ced lady clerks agreeing to give them tour four shillings anti and sixpence each per day to extract me one hundred and twenty five names each and it more names the number agreed upon they should receive pay at the foregoing rath my clerks averaged me names each per day which gave me at an expense of al 1 office fee and ai 1 as clerk hire making a total expense per day of 22 2 79 an average cost of but IJ cents per name I 1 have a fixed ding aing with the office to get all my work and auy any of my friends friend work done at the same figures from the best information I 1 can rain gain this is ie much cheaper than oan in the now new Bri bridgland gland states where the oost cost Is 1 about six elx cents per name A all 11 principal surnames eur names are on record in the register generals office found in ireland I 1 procured a book treat treating ipg of two thousand principal surnames which are spelled in different ways in different districts in ireland this book proves to be a good guide in hunting given names and locating them in in their respective districts assisting the searching parties to open up a correspondence respond eDde where it is deemed necessary now if I 1 can be of any use in furnishing information to any friend on the foregoing subject I 1 shall take great pleasure in so doing without money consideration about the year 1887 a law was wae enacted by the british parliament compelling parents to register births marriages and deaths in their families at the regi register stet pa office ce of the district where they reside under pains and penalties for neglecting to do so no thus a harvest of names are garnered in the different depositories repositories deposit ories of the nation the rule having been in full operation in ireland since 1864 1 I was also advised that there was another office in dub lin cattle castle where the pedigreed grees of all persons persona owning estate in ireland with their coat of aims could be obtained 2000 being the fee exacted in my case there are register districts organized in the country all of which have to report to the register generals office where the facts are re again recorded so it will be seen that a search in the principal office will awe a person the trouble of traveling over the country I 1 am of the opinion that similar arrangements range ments could be made with the register general 13 office at somerset house london M W DALTON WILLARD box elder eider co utah P 8 elders edward stevenson of salt aalt lake city and T W brewerton of this place have seen been the forms forma of births marriages and deaths filled up they are much pleased with the order p punted u r ju ed and take much I 1 interest there la in M W D |
