Show City councilman resigns The mayor assured the concerned citizens that the final decision of naming the new council member would be made in an open meeting and all four candidates given a fair chance. 'I can tell you that the final decision won't be made in a closed meeting." Councilman Paul Toller told the Charnelle residents that they shouldn't feel that can't have fair representation just because their next door iieighbor isn't on the council. "I know where you are coming from, but you will be fairly represented anyway, no matter who replaces Vaughn." Many of the 25 residents in attendance at-tendance at the meeting remember a few years ago, when the subdivision was not invited to the annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the city. Councilman Wendell Wild told the citizens the council would be considering experience and background of the candidates before a decision is made, besides just the location. The mayor also took the opportunity oppor-tunity to announce that a city image committee would be formed soon to implement goals that will bring residents of the city closer together. "It will give all the citizens of West Bountiful something to identify with." In other action, the council adopted two ordinances, one governing gover-ning hazardous materials and the other, cost recovery for gross negligence neg-ligence caused fires or intentionally caused fires. The new ordinances will allow the city to have in place the means of recouping damages from other responsible parties. By PAUL CHALLIS WEST BOUNTIFUL-The resignation res-ignation of Councilman Claude Vaughn has stirred up residents of the Charnelle Subdivision to submit a petition at a recent West Bountiful City Council meeting endorsing a replacement candidate. The group wants continued representation rep-resentation for the somewhat isolated neighborhood of the city and to put someone back in on the council from their subdivision, replacing Vaughn. The Charnelle Subdivision citizens are supporting Ruth Steele, from their neighborhood. West Bountiful has been accepting applications ap-plications for the council to fill in for Vaughn, who is quitting to go on a 12-month mission for the LDS Church to Canada with his wife. Four applications have been received by the city to fill the council coun-cil slot, including Steele, Lynn Kenison, Richard Judd and Tom Ramage. Laurel Barms, the spokesperson for the group that presented the petition peti-tion signed by 140 residents endorsing endors-ing Steele, asked the council to consider con-sider their nominee to give them continued representation on the town's governing body. Steele commented about the city's logo on the council's agenda letter head which states "Strength, Unity and Family" as the theme of the elected officials and full-time staff. "We don't feel like part of the family," she said. "We must unite and help our city remain a city." Mayor Carl Johnson said a review of the applicants will be done next week and each of them would be looked at very closely. The choice for the replacement will be appointed by the council to complete com-plete the unfinished term of the resigning elected official. "We need to get acquainted with these people who have submitted applications, and we will follow general guidelines in choosing a replacement," Johnson said. The council voted to accept Vaughn's resignation at the meeting, thanking him for his years of service to the community and presenting him with a plaque and a gift. |
