Information on the subject FIRE PREVENTION I The Salt Lake City tire fire department from the records of the year just past Is still making rapid strides along the lines of fire prevention as wen well as fire protection During the year ear 1918 the department responded to alarms of which were fires and false and unnecessary as compared to alarms of oC which were fires and false and unnecessary In they have started During the year inspections were made an average of three forty per day not including Sundays The chief of the department wishes to extend a word of thanks to the business men of the city for their hearty cooperation with the department in the work of keeping keeping keep keep- ing basements and alleys clean and not allowing the accumulation of rubbish and other combustibles that are such fire breeders WEEKS WEEK'S CAMPAIGN A large and elaborate campaign on fire faro prevention was held in this city week of January 20 to 25 inclusive The chief was assisted in these exer- exer s by the fire prevention bureau ot of the Pacific a number of Illustrated lectures were given at a a. number of club and in various theatres of the city which were followed with the keenest ot of Interest by everyone present The chief had arranged to have a campaign on this great subject i such as had never been seen in this community before and he Is more than satisfied with the results attained and the great Impression these exercises made upon the people which is evIdenced evidenced evI- evI by the large number of inquiries inquiries in- in made and advice sought by a number of residents of this community They have been Imbued with the desire desire de- de sire to remove the simple everyday fire hazards In and around theIr homes and reduce the number number num- num ber of There Is no city In the United States with a population around has more modern or up- up date to-date fire fighting apparatus or can boast ot of lower annual fire losses than Salt Lake City Just because the people people peo- peo have such good protection against fire they should not let up In their efforts efforts ef- ef forts to make the conditions in and around theIr homes such that all alI of those preventable fires will not occur SAYING SAVING ON ON REPAIRS The department Is still maintaining Its machine shop All the repairs on the equipment of the department are done in this shop which causes a great savIng to the city as wel as havIng these repairs made promptly and without without with with- out the serious hindrance to the operation operation oper- oper of the department as would be experienced by having to depend onn on the various automobile repair shops for this work Fire apparatus might be needed at any time therefore it is not good policy to have it laying in some repair shop for a day or day dayI I and a half waiting to be repaired No matter what time a breakdown occurs I Inight night or daY It Is immediately taken to the machine shop and Is repaired and put back In service with the least possible delay In addition to the regular regular reg- reg ular running repairs being kept up another another an- an other combination hose and chemical motor car has been rebuilt In the machine shop This piece of apparatus is now worth and the cost to the city was very nominal |
