the stock exchange and the changes iii prices tin the days transactions are insignificant except In the case of a few specialties The commission com-mission hcuses complained of the absence ab-sence of orders Their foreign trade was light and was on both sides of the market and the local traders were not disposed dis-posed to operate on either side of the market The prevailingtpne was depression depres-sion and the chief cause was the postponement post-ponement by the Senate of the consideration considera-tion of the pooling bill At the opening the market was generally firm with Loulsvalle NashvIlle D R G preferred pre-ferred and Ontario Western dIsplaying display-ing most strenrt < The last named stock was advanced y per cent in the early trading on the report re-port that a dividend would soon be declared de-clared on the common stock of the company com-pany which would have the effect of breaking the existing voting trust under which directors are elected by the pre ferred shai ehold rs and Riving the control con-trol to the common stockholders Chicago Chi-cago Gas was very weak on heavy sales induced by the legal complications which have grown cut of the effort to change the company The stock opened at a decline of ljs per cent and a further break of 1 per cent in the first few sales A brisk covering movement however quickly followed fol-lowed causing a rally of lh per cent After the first fifteen minutes a general reaction took place led by New Jersey Central with a loss of < but theie was j prompt recovery in which Burlington and St Paul were most prominent During the tcccnil hour Sugar was sold down and a few other blocks moved back including in-cluding Iowa Central preferred which fell off I per cent Wheeling Lake Erie preferred broke 21f and there was a very general decline of a fraction except in St Paul < t Duluth and Metropolitan Traction which rose 2 ¼ and li per cent respectively In the late dealings Chicago Gas was bought to cover short contracts and touched the highest point of the day at the dote The general market was well held in the final trading and closed steady D R G shows a gain of 1 percent per-cent over yesterday There was
