Show Who's Really Number One? I think I can sympathize with those people who agonized over voting BYU number one in the college football polls. Ive walked a few steps in their moccasins, having had the for the past two years of voting in the Prep Poll that the Green Sheet participates in during the high school basketball season. While its certainly not a life or death matter, sometimes it gives you pause as you try to determine who is going to get your vote. We vote for the top five in the 3A and 4A divisions and Ive found myself caught up in the same situation as did those who voted BYU number one as one by one the other highly-ranketeams stubbed their toes. You have to go with the Bengals as d I personally think that Judge Memorial is the best prep team in Utah. And South is the most dangerous. too. Provo, you see, is undefeated. The Bulldogs have put on their uniforms 16 times and 16 times theyve won. Judge Memorial has won 16 games too, but those Bulldogs made the mistake of stubbing their paws at American Fork. No matter that they came back and blitzed a good Hillcrest team. That loss came about the time they started taking the poll and, of course, everyone went with the unbeaten Bulldogs, despite a sneaking suspicion that the n variety might be a little once-beate- better. And, like in the national polls, once youve voted them there, theres no excuse for changing your mind. City Planning . So unless they stumble, Provo will likely take that number one ranking and all the pressure that goes with it into the state tournament where Judge and a whole bunch of others will try to take it away from them. But while my conscience wouldnt let me jump off the 3A bandwagon, the fact that everybody except Brighton has been losing let me really get down to brass tacks in the 4A poll. This one happens to believe that Hillcrest and Bingham are both pretty good teams, so both got a vote - along with Skyline and Bonneville and, of course, Brighton on top. I dont know how the others solved the dilemma. It helps me to have seen everyone but Bonneville and to have heard an eyewitness account of the Lakers from Cyprus mentor Mark Wilson. It points up what youve probably suspected all along. Polls arent very scientific. And if the truth were told, they arent very important. Ricks pointed out that property owners can be part of the redevelopment effort in the hope of making the area more attractive through this process. He said that South Salt Lake is doing as much as 20 acres, but one of the problems here is identifying the kinds of uses which are economically feasible. Ricks distributed questionnaires which listed a variety of suggested uses for land in the old part of town. A majority of the 25 people present voted for office and commercial, with a compatible mix of high density and low density housing. In addition, they also felt that the area could support better quality housing ranging in the neighborhood of from $55,000 to more than $60,000 per home. 1 WO KIKI DKI Cut KKyJGdOBEIB 15 Ethel Bradford and unfriendly environment. Thursday, February It's Just How You Look At It guilty of voting record rather than gut feeling, you tell me why St. Johns is ranked number one in the college polls when everybody is willing to bet the rent that Georgetown will win the NCAA tournament? Our high school teams will have their chance in March to prove who really is number one. But dont be too stunned if someone ends up in the semi-final- s or even the finals who was shunned by the polls. The ideal match-up- s would, of course, be Provo and Judge and Brighton and, possibly, Bonneville, only because because Brighton has already played all of the other good teams, but dont bet on it. The Bengals would probably like to avenge their loss to Bountiful, which lost to Olympus, which lost to Granger, which couldnt beat Kearns. You get the picture. -- But if you notice the poll, Provo is the unanimous choice for the top 3A team. Which, of course, means that Ive been voting for the Utah County team number one. Thats easy. After that, Ill bet there are at least two more teams in Region Two who belong right behind them. The teams in Region Two are so good that they keep beating up on each other - and losing to Brighton. So someone from Regions One, Three and Five slips in ahead of whoever hasnt played Brighton lately in Region Two when the polls are taken. But recently, with the exception of a pretty good Bonneville team in Region One, the pretenders have been losing. Skyline fell from its lofty number two position by losing to Cottonwood Friday. Last week Bountiful was Highlands victim. So there was Bingham which was unbeaten in preleague play against teams from all those other regions, but has stumbled a few times in Region Two, poised to move back up the ladder. Well, Hillcrest knocked off the Miners Friday night. THE GREEN SHEET 5 STORE 7200 S. 25 E.
