Well, its a long story, we replied. I didnt even correctly identify Ted and Sharon because the innocent ought to be protected. Besides, all these years of being careful about libel and slander have taught me a thing or two. We met the Carrs back in 49, said Bette, beginning the story at the proper place the beginning. Theyd been married several years and had one child, a son about seven. Theyd lost a daughter at birth and they made no secret of the fact they wanted a larger family. Enough so that a couple years later Sharon investigated the system Mayo Clinic had devised to improve pregnancy chances, we added. It was based on temperature and timeliness as I remember and Ted had to be at the proper time. We joked about it a lot, but that stopped when the first daughter came - Johnny-on-the-sp- along. Everybody had a good laugh, but as it turned out it was on us because the Mayo treatment was already working and Sharon was pregnant. And it was after that the two girls came on the scene in quick succession, Bette laughed. And then a boy and another girl. By then wed left the Midwest and moved to Utah but we never lost contact. The Carrs brought their growing family out to visit us a couple times and we took our tribe back there two or three times. It was a real picnic when we got all our kids together. Picnic or panic, was our Right, rejoinder as we recalled trying to keep that many toddlers in hand at the same time. After all, we had three under three years of age when we reached Utah.
