Show 5B Hospital Offers Free Rides New Year's Eve SALT LAKE CITY. In its continuing effort to keep the drunk or drugged driver off the road over New Years, Highland is Ridge Hospital again sponsoring complimentary rides home to party-goer- s who are unable to drive home after toasting in 1988. Beginning at 11:00 p.m., New Years Eve and running through 5:00 a.m., New Years Day, the Highland Ridge Hospital Helwill take calls pline, from the Salt Lake area. "Every year we get more calls," said Marvin Carter, Community Services Director. "The first year we ran the program we had about 100 calls, and last year we received well over 500 calls from Lake We residents. Salt 272-HEL- P anticipate approximately the same number of calls this year." This high volume meant that people had to be patient. At peak times, the wait for rides was over an hour. "I do believe, instead, it indicates that more are people becoming safety-conscious- "As an Alcohol and Drug Treatment Hospital, we see the of devastation alcoholism and drug dependency on a daily basis," continued Carter. "Consequently, we are the last people who would advocate drinking on New Years Eve at all. But we have to recognize that a problem exists, and our Annual Free Ride Program is our long-lastin- g response to that problem." If a person feels they cannot drive safely, they can call Highland Ridge Hospital, tell the Helpline where they are, and where they live; and the Hospital will provide transportation home within the limits of Salt Lake Valley. All they have to do is call 272-HEL- The Hospital will also provide rides to people whose dates or companions have had too much to drink and who need a safe ride home. Theater Courses Now Offered At SLCC TAYLORSVILLE. Three Theater courses have been added to the list of offerings at Salt Lake College, Redwood Community Road campus. Beginning Jan. 4, Survey of Theater, Basic Acting and History of Musical Theater will be offered through the School of Continuing and Community Education. The basic acting course will be offered both day and evening, with the other two courses offered only during the day. All theater courses will count as Humanities credits for the Associate of Arts degree and are transferable to the University of Utah for liberal education credit. The courses are geared towards personal as well as professional development and there is no need for previous theater experience. Pasquali Ferrari, who holds a Ph.D in theater, will be the instructor. He has been involved in theater for about 20 years and has written directed and numerous community theater productions. He comments he is working on the development of an Associate of Arts degree in theater and hopes to direct school productions in the future. Fall quarter was a first for theater classes at SLCC, and Dr.Ferrari said he was pleased with the level of interest and participation and looks forward to a successful theater arts program for students and community.
