Show Feminist United Network aims for student involvement By Clint Wright correspondent The Signpost Weber State University's Feminist United Network uses student involvement to raise awareness about gender. However, FUN has had a hard time recruiting students to help spread awareness. FUN is involved with increasing awareness about domestic violence, unrealistic beauty standards, stereotypes, reproduction, abortion, eating disorders, double standards and inequality with wages. "The hardest thing is getting stu WSU tennis recruits around the world By Laura Robinson correspondent The Signpost Therina Steenkamp and Tiffany Smith have traveled thousands of miles to play tennis at Weber State University. Steenkamp a senior who will graduate this month with a degree in athletic training, is from Nelhpruit, South Africa. She said the transition from life in Africa to life in the United States was not an easy one to make. "It was hard at first. What made it hard was that my first language was African and speaking English all the time was difficult, but everyone was really helpful," she said. "It was an opportunity that not everyone has a chance to take." Steenkamp said she took advantage of the opportunity to become a better player during her time here at WSU. In fact, she's done so well that she has become the No. 1 player on the team. But her tennis career began at a young age in Africa."I have been playing tennis since I was 5 years old with my whole family at a club that we used to go to back home," Steenkamp said. Steenkamp said she seldom gets to spend time with her family. She only makes the three connection flight once a year during Christmas Solutions continued from page 2 R I O I B 1 E T I O I M I B r'lC I H I I I T S S L A 5. Steenkamp said she has enjoyed her experiences at WSU, despite being away from her family. She said one of the highlights of her experiences here is that she has been able to travel to place she never would've imagined traveling to. "I get to see a lot of places," she said. "I used to see these places on TV but now I've actually been to these places," Steenkamp said. Steenkamp said she is more than willing to give advice to anyone planning on or going through a similar experience. She' said the best advice she could give is to be prepared and to not go against the local culture. "Bring warm clothes and just go with the flow," said Therina. Going with the flow is exactly what freshman Tiffany Smith from Eudunda, Australia is doing. "The transition was kind of easy," said Tiffany, "But I never thought I would miss home a lot." Smith said she got adjusted to her classes right away but didn't really know what to expect as far as tennis was concerned. "I wasn't used to training so much, it took a lot to get used to," she said. Smith said the coaches, players See Tennis page 8 'fffe Wm The Easiest Way iiiof JfeiiiAS!
