He has been teaching at WSU for 39 years and has published 18 books, including "Starfire" and "Old Crack Foot." Allred isjustoneof the professors involved in the creative writing program.Brad Roghaar writes poetry and has received Utah's Poet of the year award. Other professors Allred expects to be involved in teaching classes for the new emphasis are Judy Elsey, Walt Prothero and Karen Maloney. "We have people with excellent credentials," Allred said. The new major will not be adding any new classes in the English department. . - "The emphasis is not creating any new courses. It is creating a menu of already existing courses," Deeter said. Four main areas will be required 'for the new creative writing rmphasis. First, six credits will be required from writing courses such as fiction writing, poetry writing, magazine writing or biographical writing. Ron Deeter English department instructor will be required in studies of genre. Third, a minimum of three credits must be completed in workshops. Fourth, there will be portfolio and public reading requirements to be completed during or before a students final semester. This is not the first time the English department has undergone the proposal process. "The entire curriculum went through at the semester switch," Dohrer said. The most recent change prior to the creative writing emphasis was a proposal passed on March 21. This proposal changed the English major from 33 to 39 credits. Students interested in the new major should visit the English department located on the third floor of the Social Science Building.
