Theatre Opens Movie Based on Chinese Life The "Sand Pebbles" was first a novel by the late Richard Mc-Kenna who served in China as a U.S. Navy seasman. For two years, he was aboard the USS "Gold Star" patrolling the Yangtze River in China. He completed twenty years in the Navy and returned to the University of North Carolina to earn his bachelor's degree in English. For the background of this, his only novel, McKenna chose the 1920's along the Yangtze. The novel received the Harper's Prize in 1963 and was on the New York Times best-seller list for 28 weeks. Film producer-director Robert Wise selected playwright Robert Anderson to adapt McKenna's book for the screen. The motion picture was made in Taiwan and Hong Kong to recreate as accurately as possible the China mainland and the tempo of 1926. Stars of the film, now showing at the Uptown Theatre, are Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna andCandice Bergen.Principal roles are also played by Marayat Andriane, Mako, Larry Gates and Charles Robinson. It took four years from the purchase of the book to the completion of the project with locations including California, Taiwan, Hong Kong and several military bases overseas. The fifth star of the film is the "San Pablo", largest and most expensive movie prop ever constructed. A workable three -inch gun on bow and stern was part of the equipment on the recreated gunboat. The ship was built in Hong Kong at a cost of $200,000. During the film production the 150 foot steel-hulled replica was insured against weather, fire and even submarine or gunboat attack for $1 million.
