J 'hmh Weber State welcomes 700 new freshmen by Jan Crookes Weber State College President Joseph L. Bishop welcomed almost 700 new freshmen to the campus during the morning and afternoon sessions of Freshman orientation on Tuesday, September 20. To begin the program the new "frosh" were introduced to Weber State's student government leaders, who expressed the necessities and advantages of student government and described their individual responsibilities as student officers. Following were reports on specific areas by J. Farrell Shepherd, director of the Union. Building; John Knight, director of Intramurals; Dale L. Gardner, director of the Dee Events Center; Dr. Gary L. Carson, director of the Counseling Center; and Captain David M. Peters from ROTC. A short movie concerning the different fraternities, sororities and Intramural groups was shown before the freshmen were "revived" by the WSC Cheerleaders and "Change of Pace," a student group. Each new freshman was given free tickets for the WSC-Northern Arizona football game and post-game stomp last weekend, a free game of bowling in the Union Building, free admission to a college movie, and a free ice cream cone from the Union Building ice cream parlor. Toward the end of the orientation program a short tour of the campus took the new freshmen up to the football stadium where they could participate in rapelling, supervised by the WSC ROTC. Early in the afternoon, seven members of the Salt Lake City hang Glider organization, "Wasatch Wings," landed on the campus to close the morning session and open the afternoon program. Students unable to attend Tuesday's meetings were invited to a single session last Thursday evening in the Social Science Building.
