Always a friend to the Indians, he was one of the first teachers at the Indian school at Moccasin, Ariz., and remained just "Dave" to numerous members of the piute Indian tribe whom he taught while at Moccasin. He married Maria Smith of Rockville in the St. George L.D.S. Temple on April 24, 1891, and the couple lived in Rockville until her death in 1917, when he moved permanently to his ranch on the Arizona Strip. Never active personally in church or civic affairs, he was a generous contributor to these causes. He is survived by four sons and one daughter, Walden Ballard, Bal-lard, bishop of Rockville ward; Afton. Arch and Elwin Ballard, all of Rockville, and Mrs. Nora B. Kelsey of New Harmony. |
